Title: Gti mk1 probs
Post by: oatcakes on 09 March 2004, 21:52
Hi there
i just got myself a mk1 golf last week, after about three days of driving the car began to have trouble starting.

After a number of test's it turned out to be the timing belt jumping, timing is now way out.

Problem now is i cant find any timing marks on the cam puley or anywhere near the casing.
Any help would be great

HI, crankshaft times up thru hole in g/box bell housing. Mark on fly wheel and pointer on casing. Cam has a dot on the pulley, this lines up with the horizontal face of the head/rocker cover (take the oil cap off and check the cam lobes for no1 are "rocking"). Time the distributer at no1 with the line on the rotor arm inline with the notch in the body. I take it you will be fitting a new belt and tensioner while you are at it ;).
