Title: G60 engine + 020 box = bad idea?
Post by: Dolly on 24 October 2007, 18:05
im about to take ownership of a G60 engine all anicallarys gearbox as well. but i figure its a fair bit of work to convert my 8v gti to the hydraulic clutch and cable change plus i havent got the parts to do it!

So how many of you have experiance of using the G60 engine with the 8v gti gearbox 020? does the gearbox last long? i dont really race my cars everywhere but occasionally i do open them up for a blast. ive also read using a 16v clutch fits straight in and can cope with the g60 power output..

So just looking for any personall experiances and opinions.

Dont expect the box to last, they can pop the diff rivets with standard power so the box in not going to like the hike, take the time now to fit a decent box as if the diff throws a rivet it will ruin the box and the clutch

the G60 engine comes with its original 02A box but i dont know how much of a job fitting the hydraulic clutch is? im guessing i need a pedal box then does it use the brake fluid resoviour or does it have its own resoviour? then the pipe to the slave cylinder right?
Then ill need to source the cables/gear shift/knob ect.

I have a mk2 seat ibiza fitted with the ABF engine (2l 16v) same as Golf mk3 gti.... my Seat has rod change but cable clutch? i have no idea what gearbox code is on my ibiza but im starting to wander if there is someway that would work?

Stick some VR6 cogs 1st and 2nd also 5th with a TDi cog. that should be good for over 200BHP
Do the layshaft whilst it out just to be sure if you're anal like me.

You can still run a cable clutch on the 02a gearbox by running a seat mechanical clutch actuator (bolts in place of the slave cylinder) and tbh the fitting of the cable change isnt that big a job

i have be enlightend today.. about this bolt on adapter.. its attaches to the gearbox slave cylinder, and then you fit a 1.3 clutch cable and apparently all is good. TSR did these apparently?

So... for the cable shift do i basically need everthing between the gearknob and the selectors on the box? .. i dont imagine im going to need a new gearknob

you could get one of those cool gear knobs with the button and flashin leds and sometimes they have skull ones too!!!

but yeah, there is a kit available to convert the cable system into hydraulic, seen them about, not too sure where though...

check fleabay

Before you try to fit the gearbox with the engine, check to see if it will go straight in. I have a G60 and have just stripped the interior to nothing. And it is very different to an 8v. The tunnel is different, or so it seems and the centre pedastal fits differently to my old 8v's. The carpets are also very different.

i assume you mean check the hydraulics for the clutch and the cable for the change fit?  ive found a guy with all i need to do it properly, pedal box to slave cylinder and all the cable linkeage, its from a corrado G60 and he says it does fit.
