Having now had the GTi for a while I'm getting bored just polishing it, I'm thinking it's time to start sorting out all the little 'niggles'. To that effect, the gear changing, although not sloppy, isn't as crisp as I'd like, it can sometimes be a little, resistant, but I have no idea what the cause/fix would be....
Would this sort of thing help matter?

Many thanks!

That might do it, but when you say "resistant" is that in all gears or just certain gears at odd times?
-
Yes, pretty much randomly when I think about it!
-
Hate to worry you but thats what mine was like then a couple of months later it was in the garage havin a the gearbox recon'd!
-
Uh-oh... how much did that set you back? It's nothing severe, as I said just a niggle really, selecting the gears is fine, it just feels 'awkward' around the shifter itself?!

Got quoted 450 for a rebuild alone.. Got a family friend where we take our cars tho and got a rebuild, new clutch, new speedo sensor, all for £420! It does feel incredible now tho.. Worth gettin it any niggles sorted with the box to stop any future expesive-ness!

That kit will not work with your car. Your gearbox isn't about to blow up either. It's a common fault on the 02a boxes used in the Mk3 16V, the Mk3 VR6 and some Corrados. Because the box is cable change rather than rod change, the cables can slacken etc and they just need adjusting to counteract the possible synchromesh wear. If you get a used box, 9 times out of 10 it will have the same fault. Any vw specialist will have fixed this many times. There are no repair kits available for it now matter how hard you look
This is a guide on how to adjust..

Take it the 16V are cable then?
Cheers Pete.
Thank you all, sounds like I'd better put some money away for next month then!

Yup 16v ABF use 02a cable change the same as the VR6, all other models of Mk3 and all previous versions of Golf use rod change. Look on top of your gearbox and you'll see the two cables going to the box

Pete, you are a legend Sir! Excellent news as Barclays would be less than impressed if they had to fork out for a refurbed box!!
Right then, I better have a read up & see if it's a practical DIYer!! Ta very muchly!
