Title: Newbie... few questions
Post by: kenny.s on 22 October 2007, 10:01
Hi all,

I've been having a read on here for the last week or so trying to help me make my mind up about what car to buy next.
I was quite surprised to read about people complaining about build quailty, rattles etc i had always associated VW with pretty much sqeak and rattle proof cars. But are the complaints on here really a true reflection on the car it's self, there must be thousands of them out there by now, afterall bad news travels faster than good, someone with a GTi that doesnt rattle or squeak isn't necessarily going to come on here and say so as thats whats expected of the car/brand but those with issues are more likely to come onto forums such as this and highlight them?

I've also been reading up on a few other cars that i've been considering, but just now a 3dr GTi with DSG is at the top of the short list, everything i've read seems to suggest it'll best suit my needs.

1. Have they done anything on the latest models to address the numerous rattles and quailty issues etc?

2. Is there a factory fit Bluetooth option available on the latest ones?

3. When is the MkV being replaced? I would ideally like to save a while longer as i'm not desperate to have one right now but dont wont to get caught out by the the introduction of the mkVI, from the pictures i've seen so far i dont particularly like it.

Cheers

Kenny

Welcome to the forum

I can state that our GTI has had no rattles yet and we have had it for a year. However our GTI's are built in South Africa so maybe thats why we have had no real rattles etc.

As far as I know the MK5 is being replaced next year. But to be honest I cant see VW making a better GTI than the MK5.

I think you do get a factory fit bluetooth kit... But im not sure.

I think that when it comes to buying the car you should buy cos its a brillaint car and not becasue you are worried it maight rattle. Rattles can be fixed.

Hope I kind of helped.

i just bought an e30,

1) there arnt really any rattles etc, only the rear seatbelt on the side of the car.. lol, just need to move it... id ignore this issue
2) bluetooth is an option i believe, i dont have it however.
3) not sure on the mk6, however i think everyone is ready for an ugly looking car and believe the mk5 is the last good looking model.

im very happy with my e30!

same here, no rattles or build quality issues, IMO the interior on the MK5 is of a better quality than the MK4, I had a few issues with the dash in my old R32, and since I've had my GTI I've had no such problems.

I have just come from an S3 to the Ed30 and mine doesn't have any rattles at all.  I think the build quality is very good and have no complaints.

The DSG box is great and gives you the option to drive whatever way tickles yer fancy that morning which is a real plus coming from a manual only car

I'm on my 4th Mk5 and have had no issues with squeaks and rattles etc... well.. there was a slight bit on my current Ed30 but it went after a couple of weeks when the dash settled down   But generally they have been fantastic - almost as good as the Mk2 Golfs

Had one rattle on the centre top console, but it is sorted now. Build quality is good - better than Ford or Vauxhall by a mile.

The DSG is fantastic and I am currently on my third car with DSG :smug:

3dr is great if you don't have more than one passenger on a regular basis.

I personally have gone for an aftermarket set up for the Bluetooth, so don't know anything about a standard set up.

Cheers for the replies guys.
I wasn't going to be put off buying it because of rattles etc just wondered if it was really that big a deal or just the odd isolated case.

I was talking to someone i know who works for a big car electronics company in Derby. He's done a few intallations in Mk5's and suggested a Kenwood double din screen that has sat nav, bluetooth, dvd, mp3, ipod ready and far better sound quality than the std unit and would work out far cheaper than the factory options which still wouldnt give me all the features this has.
I appreciate that aftermarket might not be to everyones taste but he assures me it's very factory looking when done properly.

Just need to get down to the dealer and arrange a test drive

I have a Kenwood fitted DNX7200, Hurdy did a write up on here and It was a great help in making my mind up   I went for the ipod link and blue-tooth. Really pleased with it and it works with the MFSW, so you get volume and track skip etc :nerd:
I added new speakers in the front and a sub but a few people I know have just changed the head unit and have been more than happy with sound.

Nice one, thats the very one he was talking about just couldnt remember the model number. Does look pretty factory right enough, if it didnt say Kenwwod i doubt anyone would be any the wiser.

So from the Audio options i just want the basic headunit and the MFSW?
No point getting anything thats going to be removed but likewise if there's something that can be used like the MFSW i'll be sure to tick that box

The local dealer only has a DSG R32  need to go a bit further a field and see if any of them have a DSG Gti as a demonstrator.

get the r32 man

mine does kind of squeak especially when parking but it ain't the end of the world................although bmw's don't do this whatsoever............so i think ultimately you get what ya pay for

i got a parrot thingy for bluetooth which is okay but i want to know if anyone actually has a cradle to go with the phone prep

i think vw did not think this through one bit! they think vw drivers don't have phones or speak on their phones as they'll be too busy driving quickly!!! muppets!!!!

I'm already pushing it thinking about a brand new GTi yet alone an R32

I can handle the odd wee clunk or rattle but for it to really bother me it would need to be something that could be heard easily over the radio at a normal level ie still able to talk to someone in the car.

I spoke to this guy about the parrot kit, he did say it was about the best of the aftermarket stand alone blue-tooth kits but given the choice ie if i was buying a new car he suggested it would be better to just bite the bullet and get the Kenwood DNX7200 on the previous page, does everything any of the std kit can do plus more and it's all in one unit.

He also said that a lot of the factory blue-tooth kits weren't all that great anyway so it's not as though it's a big deal, the fact its not got anything to begin with is a good reason to put an aftermarket unit in it.

Hi kenny.s, If your going for an aftermarket unit then go for standard hi-fi option. I really like the MFSW (old gti didn't have it), just nice having the controls at hand IMO. I find the Kenwood a great piece of kit, the sat-nav is spot on, I love the display and everything just seems to work, it also sounds pretty good

If you try the R32, put some ear-plugs in, the sound of it will make you want one  You wont need a Hi-Fi upgrade then

Both great cars.

Ah well looks like i wont be trying the R32 afterall, took a wander along this morning to have a nosey and it turns out they sold it at the weekend
Spoke to another dealer in Glasgow (or should that be stealer as many seem to call them on here lol) who's going to try and arrange a test drive in a DSG Gti on Friday if not he can definately get hold of a manual one.

Apparently there's about a 3 month wait on a GTi just now but that could work out quite nicely for me, once i've put the initial deposit down to actually order the car it gives me some time to save and take less on finance, if i can force my self to hold off long enough i might even be able to buy it

I was seriously impressed by the GTi test drive. I loved the sharp handling and steering, the effortless power and the great seats. A few months of ownership and I'm still enjoying these attributes. Slightly dissapointing is the overall build quality (rattles, some low grade plastic in cabin, paint quality, Farah seat material ) I would say in this respect it's on par with GM, Ford, Honda etc but nothing more.

No car is perfect though and the GTi is a very appealing car, but considering the less than fantastic build quality, should really be 2-3K less money.

all three are great cars (gti, ed30 and r32) and all bargains for what they do

the power aside from the bhp differential just comes from slightly different places

good luck with the purchase

it took me a long time to buy my car and i can't complain

i am haemorraging money for the fuel compared to my old car but i don't drive that much and what with carbon footprint, i think we'll all be forced into the blue motion one day!!!!

Went for a test drive yesterday and i can now see why your all grinning from ear to ear
I didnt really get a chance to stretch it's legs, mostly round the outskirts of Glasgow but it was enough to know that it's a very, very nice car.
The one i drove was a manual and i really liked it, so much smoother than anything i've been used to. I'd still like to get a shot in a DSG but to be honest i think i might be happier in the long run with a manual. i know the DSG has it's advantages and it makes the car marginally quicker but i think i would miss the involvement of a manual.

The salesman also said that to gaurantee delivery for an 08 reg orders have to be in by the 15th of November? I said i wasn't particularly bothered about having it for the first week in March, if anything i'd rather wait till the mad rush had passed. But he said if i ordered after the 15th it could be into April/May before i got it?
Probably going to go down to my local dealer today and have a chat, no point buying a car from a dealer 30 miles away when there's one i can walk to. I feel a purchase is imminent

Went into the local dealer on Saturday and had a chat, turns out the salesman i was talking to knows my old man, need to see if i can get some freebies. I never realised this until i spoke to him but due to the huge waiting list all your really doing when you place an order is booking a place in the production line, so right up until about 2-3 weeks before the car is due to be built you can change just about anything you like. This made things a bit easier for me as it gives me loads of time to get a shot in a dsg and decide if i prefer it to the manual. Just now they recon i should get it in time for the new 08 reg but wont know for sure until they've put the order in and had word back from VW.
For now i've gone for a Diamond Black 3dr, Manual, 18" Monzas, Bi-xenons, highline, arm rest, cruise control and the electric folding mirror option.
It's going to be a long 5 months

My father has a 2006 GTi DSG - gearbox broke after 1 month when a sensor failed.  Took ages to get the sensor replaced.  Makes you wonder how reliable the DSG box will be in a few years, especially when the warranty runs out....

Was also told by the dealer that a complete replacement DSG box is horrendously expensive.

DSG a great gearbox, and DSG car is faster through the gears vs the manual, but good idea to stick with the manual longterm I think.

I ordered my ED30 last November and it arrived the last week of Feb. Still enjoy the car Soooooooo much I always grin.

DSG is great. Someone has probably said that its a Marmite thing..Love it or hate it.

I suppose it's only normal to be concerned about the long term reliablity with something as high tech as the DSG, i'm sure VW have done huge amounts of testing on it but there is still the possibilty for problems to develop 4-5 years down the line with 80-90k+ and countless launches. That said i wouldn't say this has had much influence on my decision up till now, i know the DSG is highly regarded as being the best semi-automatic gearbox out there and everyone who's got one says once you've tried it you wouldn't go back to a manual but i think i would ultimately miss the involvement of a manual. I dont doubt it's would be very nice when stuck in traffic or sitting on a motorway etc but i cant help think i would start getting lazy with it and just put it in D and forget about it.

The dealer seemed pretty sure i wouldnt see it before the 1st of March and in any case if i turned up at the end of Feb i'd be happy to wait another week or two and get an 08 reg. Plus the longer it takes to arrive the less finance ill need

I use a mix of paddles and D. Stuck in traffic leave it in D. If you wanna go for a back road blast use the paddles or even the stick shift.

The only thing that could be improved is that the (gear) numbers on the display could be bigger.
