Title: Golf 1.8t upgrade update...
Post by: VW_KAL on 09 March 2004, 10:39
OK guys and gals, couple of weeks ago I posted hear with some upgrades I wanted to do, After getting feedback and recommendations from fellow forum members I went installed the following items last weekend:

1) Forge DV 007 (installed myself)
2) Carbonio Cold Air Intake (installed myself)
3) Spax Lowering Sports Springs 45mm (installed by local garage)

Im gonna test them properly this week and see how everything feels, so far the springs feel slightly stiffer, but not too stiff (maybe thats because the Golf 1.8t already had the sport suspension standard, so already was stiffer than normal Golfs). Cornering has improved, just sticks to the road, the lower stance makes it look meaner, more cleaner because the tires are perfectly flushed with the arches. So far no fouling of the driveshaft, had 4 passenger with full load of Asda shopping and the car didnt scrape over speed bumps (you have to drive slowly up to them, but I suppose thats common sense!).

The Forge 007 and Carbonio have made a vast difference on the sound and performance I think, the deep throaty sound build up, with the hissing of the Dump valve in the background followed by the pssssssstttttshhhhhhhhh when you let go of the accelerator makes it a completely different driving experience, I havent even turned the radio on ever since Ive had them installed! The 2nd and 3rd gear seem to have more ummmffff with better pickup.

The installation of the Forge DV was no prob, took about 15 mins, the carbonio CAI was a pain actually, took about 3 and a half hours. Heres a tip... take off the front bumper it really does help instead of the inner fender on the driver side wheel as mentioned by the carbonio manual. The re-connection of pipes/hoses was damn tight felt like they were all different sizes, but with a bit of huffing and puffing managed to slide the filter, breather hose MAF sensor back into place.

The springs were installed by a local garage for (40 quid they had off me) took them about 2 and a half hours.

Overall I am very pleased and got what I wanted, will leave further feedback after some more testing.

One thing I wasnt sure about and would be grateful if some one can help me; is the angle of the Filter cone that sit behind the front bumper coming off the carbonio pipe, mine has the bottom of the filter (flat plastic plate side) pointing towards the ground, is this correct position or does it have to be a different angle?

Regards
