hello all just bought a 1990 golf gti. just wondering if it should have powersteering.? also i have no warm air, mileometer doesnt work and get 2nd gear crunch. apart from that love it!
-
PAS didn't come as standard.
check your coolant level re the warm air.
-
2nd gear crunch - Change the oil in your gearbox as a first fix, if it persists even when warm then you may need to get a new gearbox
No warm air - I had the same problem my car didn't have a stat for some reason so check your water temp goes to halfway or thereabouts. If you go down the motorway and the temp is cold then your stat is permanently open.
Think your speedometer, is controlled by a cable. I'd check if this hasn't fallen off behind the instrument cluster. Get the switches/radio/dash surround out and you should have an electrical plug at the bottom, a vacuum pipe for the revs and a white plug into the back of the speedo. If its connected then maybe someone has messed around with the speedo cable on the g/box side and the cog has fallen in which is not good.

cheers mate i that a go

Second gear crunch is almost a requirement on the mk2s, i wouldn't worry, just stick some redline mtx oil in it and just be careful when it's cold.
speedo cable has probably snapped, easy fix, just make sure you don't lose the cog in the gearbox when you remove it.

look for pas fluid reservoir to the left and down from the battery.
small rectanglular reservoir.

Bit of a hijack but this sounds like my car. Time for a new stat or is there another cure?
Thanking you.

You getting both the symptoms of no hot air and a low temp gauge? If just no hot air it could be the heater matrix has an air pocket. Depending on what we end up doing for the oxford show I'll happily have a gander at it for you.

it takes a long time sometimes maybe drive for 30 mins before temp gauge goes up to nearly halfway. then when i turn th fan on it blows warmish for bout 20 secs. coolant lvel is fine as car just been serviced

Dunno if this helps much,
but my valver was also sitting at low temps esp on da motorway and the heat was luke warmish....
During a waterpump change, noticed that there was no thermostat in there!
Got a new thermo in and she warms up pretty well and the in-car heating is spot on now!
Things that are run on heat are always best shoved into a pan of boiling pan and this will always confirm parts broken or not regardless of newness
p.s test the thermostat before you put it in, i had to do it all again coz had a cack one from GSF!

Second that! Stick it in hot water and see it open.
Another reason for hot air not blowing is that the heater matrix bypass valves may be blocked. These were installed as a recall to prevent the heater matrix going pow and unloading hot coolant over the passenger.
I'm not too sure how to unblock them tho, maybe a reverse flush or a new set?

This sounds like your thermostat is stuck open or is lazy at opening. By running cool you are using more fuel too so it might be very well worth changing it as they are only about £4 and you need a new Seal too.

thanks guys i'll get on to that this weekend and let you know. hope it works, gettin a bit nippy now!
-
the other problem might be the valve inline to the heater matrix try changing that as that is a quick fix happened to me no hot air in the car change valve put antifreeze in bled it up,bingo.

hi! today i replaced the stat, unblocked some pipes goin through to the heater but no warm air. is there anything in particular i need to flush it through with?

should i just bypass the valves?

If you still have the bypass valves i would say bypass the bypass! Did it on mine last weekend and it's like being on a tropical island in my car now!
Nothing particular to flush it through with, a hosepipe will do the trick.
