can anyone help? driving home tonight my oil light and the buzzer came on for a few mins, oil temp about 110 checked the oil level and its fine but the walter seems very hot and the gage is well over half way. i've not seen that before and the fan works. dose anyone have any ideas your help would be much appreciated
-
are you sure you werent going round a long right hand corner??
the buzzer and light will sometimes come on then for a bit as all the oil is pushed to the left of the sump and the oil pickup gets starved.
aslong as it is not on continuosly u'll be fine
-
i have a 89 16v.i think it only happends when it gets hot and my tapets are a bit loud the last day or two and i wasnt going round a corner
-
Get your oil pressure tested to be on the safe side.
-
golfvr6. what you telling me? is this bad news and how bad?
-
it could be the oil pump on the way out, the reason i say that is because you said the tappets have got noisey when the engine is warm, could be start of oil starvation.
could be nothing, but i would get it checked out, otherwise you might not have an engine.
-
Thanks golfvr6. do you no how much and where from. lets hope its not the engine
-
it won't be the engine if you sort it, you can buy pressure gauges, or a garage should test it for a small fee.
-
golfvr6 what about if it is my engine what will i have to do
-
It won't be the engine, the oil pump circulates the oil, if oil starvation is the problem, chances are the pick up strainer is blocked.
Don't run the car until you are sure the oil pressure is ok, that way you won't damage the engine if the oil pump is suspect.
-
got it pressure tested today and he says theirs some pressure there but not a lot so im going to have a look tomorrow but no sure what im doing. when i get the sum off where is the pickup and pump
-
The oil pump is will be right in front of you when you remove the sump, you can't miss it!!!
I see you have been posting on clubgti, traitor ;)
-
golfvr6 what you doing on there? needed an answer quick. have you got any more advice for me please. do you think i should put thicker oil in there's synthetic at the mo
-
No, synthetic will be fine. Use Quantum Gold from VW.
The chances are the strainer on the pick up is blocked.
It simply unbolt separate from the pump, or you can unbolt the pump as well.
Probably worth changing the whole assembly if you take the sump off.
Then put some cheap oil in and flusher , and change the oil when all is done.
I see Clubgti actually got it right for once!

nice 1 golfvr6. new gasket? do you think that will stop the rattle? this bloke said today that the rattle might be from the bottom end of the engine. camshaft?
-
The camshaft is in the top of the engine.
Probably will be a good idea to change the sump gasket.
Hard to say where the rattle is coming from without seeing the car, try sorting the pump and putting new oil in, that might sort it.
Good luck :D
