Hi guys,
Was driving to pick my girlfriend up from work at the weekend when I went past a mk2 Golf. Had to have a look so I pulled over, seen it a few times and its absolutely gorgeous.
Anyway, the car's a G reg GTi 16v. 3 door with the big bumper conversion, set of scuffed 17s (one quite badly) slight chips along the passenger door which have been painted to colour but obvious when up close. Bit of the side strip is unclipped at the back just before the rear wheel arch, the front grill is loose which looks like one of the clips is broken.
Other than that I can't spot anything, the interior looks in immaculate condition and the rest of the body work looks minted. All the panels line up and there's no signs of a respray.
As you can tell I'm pretty interested in it, its goin for ?2200 OVNO but cuz of the little problems I reckon I can haggle some money off. How much do you think I should offer?
Got the buyers guide from www.matey-matey.com so I'm just pickin as much info up as poss b4 I go buy it.
Oh yeah, the cars got FSH, MOT + Tax, PAS, ABS, Sun roof and the rest of the GTi spec. Its covered 133,000 miles. Value guys?
-
for ?2200, id be looking a minter!
more in the region of ?1500 sounds reasonable - what colour is it
all the problems you have mentioned are v.easily & cheaply fixed
-
Its black with one hell of a shine, shame about the alloys really but the tyres looke brand new.
Think it is just a few clips needed to sort out the trim and the grill so like u say cheap and easy (hopefully)
I've gotta ring my insurance company first to get a quote, only got 1 years NCB and had an accident 2 years ago so I think the policy might be a touch expensive.
Would u recommend going straight for the 16v or an 8v then step up? I've got a 1.4 106 at the moment so either is gonna be great fun ;D
-
its easy to make a car shine though! there are plenty of bargain out there!
i bought my 91 16v two years ago, it had 79k on it & leather interior, and only cost me ?1200
i dont like 17's on a mk2, so that one of the first things id be getting rid off. also, if its running 17s then its had the inner rear arch lips rolled, so i'd have a good look at the condition of them.
try HIC for insurance, you'll need to ring as they have no online quoting system

I've just renewed my insurance with HIC, ?660 FC for a 1996 Pug 106. Been thinking of getting another car for a while and seeing this Golf has just put it in my head that I want a GTi.
I've had a look on Auto Trader, you're right about the price too... There's loads for cheaper than this one, gonna get a quote first then take it from there.
Cheers for the tip about the 17s tho, don't really know what to look for apart from whats written in the buying guide I mentioned earlier
-
oh and its 16v all way!
or at least drive an 8v & 16v and see the difference between them. then make your decision
also, remember that only cars after Aug 89 are genuine big bumper models, there is a lot of earlier models with big bumper conversions - id stay clear of these.
-
The advert states big bumper conversion so they're not trying to hide it, but does this make the car less safe? Always the possibility of botched work tho and the bumpers hiding that.
I really want a 16v, if the insurance is less than a grand tpft then I'll be getting one :)
-
nah, id just want an original car - it'll stand you better if & when you come to resell it also
small bumper cars can look nice also
-
Oh right, I've only really taken notice of MK2 golfs since this one so I can't think of a small bumpered golf right now.
If I find one mint enough then I think I'd only change the wheels and that'd be if they were too small. Had my share of modifying cars and I think I've just about grown out of that now :P
-
small bumper looks like this

Cheers for the info bud, took me a while to realise that that Golf was the same mark as the big bumper kit!
-
just got a 88mk2gti for ?150 absolutley perfect condition, amazing and i know someone who is selling 1 for ?300 quid, so you can get them for v.cheap. I have 1 year NCB and i can get insurance for ?1057 for 12 months with admiral insurance which is the cheapest believe me i have looked for months!!I cant even get a 16v till next year as insurance is WAY 2 high.
-
Is that fully comp or tpft? Seems bloomin high to me mate but then I haven't rang round yet.
-
That is third party... maybe its cos im 18 but believe me that is very cheap as i have tried practically every insurance company around. There is one that does over 19 yr olds called Adrian Flux and they do have a website and they were gonna insure me on a RS Turbo for ?1400 tpft, elepant.co.uk do this thing where you can get insured for 10 months and still get your NCB and that will cost me ?917 for golfgti8v.
-
Ahh I feel for you mate, I had that problem of getting a decent car when I was 18.... Ended up going for a 1.1 309 till I got some NCB behind me.... 2 months from getting 1 and then shunted a fiesta >:(
-
do not go for elephant.co.uk 10mth bonus accelerator scheme, as your NCB you build up is not recognised by other insurance companies so you are stuck with them
the same DOESNT apply to the NCB with their normal 12mth insurance cover
-
never new that... that sucks, lucky you said that bcos i was gonna renew my insurance next week guess ill be paying ?1057 then :(
-
HIC are now offering that scheme, didn't realise that the NCB aren't valid anywhere else :( Do other companies that promote the scheme accept em then?
-
Turns out they aren't offering that scheme, I'm paying monthly over ten months... Not for a 10month policy :-[
As for insurance..... ?733 TPFT for a 1990 Golf GTi 16v ;)
Back of the net!
-
I have the Elephant 10month insurance. Not had any problems yet, but I've not renewed yet.
Mine was ?750ish fully comp for Mk3 16v, but now changing policy over to my Mk2 16v (the one in sig below with small bumper).
I'll probably do another 10month policy after this one, then transfer to Admiral (Elephant's parent company) who will recognise the bonus accelerator.
My Mk2 16v cost ?700 (without tax) in pretty good condition, all original.
From your description, I'd agree that ?2200 is a bit much, probably best to aim for ?1500-1800.
-
I recently changed my policy from DirectLine to Elephant, for the same monthly premium went from TPFT to fully comp. I'm doing the 10 month accelerator which I have been assured will be acknowledged as a full year if/when I change companies.
-
Cheers for the info guys, think I'll look elsewhere but a Golf GTi is definately gonna be mine :D
Where'd you recommend I look for one? Scoured Auto Trader and there's a few on there but I need to get rid of my car first as its funding the new one
-
look out for wet seats and if you can take plastic arches off an dlook behind there, they can sometimes hold a multitude of sins. Im my case I wish I'd have done this.

Hi
I'm selling my Mk2 Golf J Reg 1991 Driver 1.6 3dr in White. It has full service history, new MOT, tax til OCT, new service, done 141k but in good nick for age. Has central locking, sunroof, and is 3dr. I have done subtle modifications to it, including Big Bumper conversion, crystal lights front and rear, clear indicators, iridium effect bulbs at rear. Debadged all round, including grille. Eyebrow spoiler, GTi lower spoiler. There are a few rust spots, but nothing major, sills are fine and arches are good. It has 15" TSW alpines, brand new set of tyres (last week) worth nearly ?200 (Continental PremiumContact 195/50/15 as recommended by Which and AutoExpress). Lowered 45mm. It looks subtle and mean, and attracts a lot of looks. Its has silver detailing inside (pedals, gearknob, handbrake, sills, some buttons etc) I can supply more photos on request. The asking price is ?1750. For all enquires contact 07890 184578 or sticky@jjames.plus.com

Hi Mark,
Haven't been here for a while lately but just a small point.
You say on the spec for the first car you looked at that it had 'ABS' I am not sure any of the Mk2s had ABS. Until recently I owned (from new) a very very late 92 VW16v (so it didn't come much more up to date than that) and it did not have ABS. I am quite willing to stand corrected, but if I am right perhaps it just indicates that you have to look carefully at what any garage writes down as the spec for any particular model? Regards, yt.
-
K9JTJ - Thanks for the offer but I'm only really after a GTi 16v.
red16v - It was a privately advertised car, so maybe the owner made a mistake\lied... Either way I'll have a proper look at the spec next time :P
-
defo no ABS as std or a factory option on Mk2 GTi's
-
had ABS on my old 88 16v mk2 GTI was a LHD import jobbie mind..
