Title: Rusty engine
Post by: dadrathers on 12 October 2007, 22:57
Hey

The rocker cover on my MkII is a bit dull but I could sort that the next time I take it off. Big problem is that the engine block and head are rusty. Not seriously, just looks 'orrible. With so much clutter attached to the engine is there any way of making it look better??

take it down your local jet wahs and with the engine running blast hell out of it! the heat from the engine should stop any water hanging around as it'll evaporate off. then go home, take off as much as you feel comfortable with, get some wire brushes and scrub away to get rid of as much skank as you can. then paint with hammerite. it may not be perfect but when its all built back up it'll look fine.

i went from a really REALLY black dirty engine bay which looked like it had not been cleaned ever
to this, all by my own hands, still working on bits too
also had rusty block as you do and most people do as its just a casting
and all the paint was cracked off on the rocker cover etc and all the aluminium bits had gone white, didnt look great so put a few hours into it and so far iv got to this

(no bits were replaced, all just cleaned up etc)

alot of hard work, basically took it all to bits haha, used sand paper, wet and try, a sh!t load of top quality metal polish then to make it shine

i guess u could do it will it all attached to the enigine still

it makes alot of dust etc so once its all sanded you have to hit the whole engine hard with lots of Gunk engine degreaser first( rinse only with watering can for the gearbox, dont rinse anywhere else just use rags) and then wd40 especially on places like the gearbox etc which wont be polished up, if not these areas will go white after the degreaser, i keep all my unpolished bits like this WD40'd

once this has been done its time to polish the bare metal bits up with good quality metal polish, has to be good quality..

rocker cover was the hardest as all the standard paint had come off and the bare metal under had gone stained somehow, took ages to sand it so it was the same as the rest

i even made my own bracket for the K7N induction kit out of 304 stainless and then polished that up too, looks cool compaired to the standard black thing u get in the kit

iv started on the isv and theirs a few other bits i wanna do some more detailing on, but i have to bear in mind this is my daily driver, i did all this to my other car too so iv got a stupid thing going on about having a clean engine haha

thanx dude

and yeah loving those pics, id like to get the full samco hose kit etc also, really does make it look alot fresher.

if mine was a show car on minimal use id prob take the engine out and clean each part seperate by hand, also certain metals loose their colour after years of use so theirs not much u can do apart from cleaning them if u understand what im saying??, mine is a 1993 90k car and was very scruffy under the hood, certain bits to make it like the show car pics uv uploaded would have to have new parts fitted if u get my drift..

i just wanted to make my daily driver presentable, im well happy with it, even more so as its all my own work

also the best thing about having a clean engine is the ability to see any leaks before they get bad and see exactly where they are coming from.

today i cleaned the underside of the car, jet washed the sump etc just so i can keep a check on leaks etc..

kells... mine is a daily driver too (84k M) but i have yet to set to work on the engine bay.. detailed everywhere else..

what are your thoughts on getting the engine bay steam cleaned and then polishing replacing shiny bits and adding the samco kit?

Title: Re: Rusty engine
Post by: kells on 14 October 2007, 23:37
i never have  any of my cars steamed i think its bad for them tbh, im sure folk will argue this but its just something i wouldnt personally do, i can see why u would want to do this as it is hard work getting it clean by hand

all i used to get mine to how it is now are

Autoglym engine degreaser
Gunk Engine degreaser (spray and brush on)
WD40
Cilic bank either orange or purple bottle cant remb which
Various sandpapers and wet and dry papers
brilopads
dremel
dril with wire brush
high grade metal polish

lots of time and hurting fingers ehehe

im gonna grab the samco kit at some point

if you cant be arsed with changing bits a good clean of the engine will make it look 100 times better and presentable, wont be hard to do, u just need rags and the degreasers plus WD40 is essential

do all the suspension struts first, and fire wall etc then move onto the rocker cover etc

i also treat all my rubber bits inc hoses, slam panel etc with autoglym bumper care, but once applied i buff it off

If you do all this u will see a massive difference, just do it bit by bit in your spare tme

i wipe the bay down all the time, its not a bad bay for collecting water spray in the wet like my other car is but you still sometimes get some spray on the firewall (minimal tho), so i just monitor it and have a wipe down regardless every few days... very anal i know

so basically if i was u id do it by hand bit by bit using the degreasers i did, autoglym one is great for some bits and the gunk is better for others

remember tho WD$) is needed for gearbox etc or alloys that have been degreased, if not they will go all dry and then turn white

P.S Cilic bang is also great for some metal parts too, trust me

thanks Kells... that's good advice

so you really think getting someone to steam clean the bay is a big no no?

No problem dude, i can see you love your car, and a loverly golf that is i might add

if it was me id say nay rather than yey, i just think their is far too much to go wrong, iv seen it happen

also..

VW put wax all over parts of the car, inc underbody and the engine bay, i have left all this in place on the bits you cant see as its their for a reason
a steam clean will also remove all this... and if like my gti you are running yours as a daily in all weather conditions, you really wanna keep all the protection you can

fanks!  i do lurve it...  just want to get it right

good advice on the 'non' to the hot power shower!... hadn't thought of the manf wax sealant... could have ended up with a rusty shed in a couple of years time... and yes it is a daily driver for the moment - probably for another year or so till I can get me a newer one so I don't shank it on mileage!
Title: Re: Rusty engine
Post by: kells on 16 October 2007, 18:11
ahh you thinking of a new car in a year or so, what would you go for??
Title: Re: Rusty engine
Post by: Guy on 16 October 2007, 21:15
hmm... something which was just for use as a daily... nothing special probably... hoping to get a company car/allowance

anything that I went for I'd just make sure it was low mileage...   would like to keep my current one and retire it from daily duties.. then i can keep it in good nic.. no point doing a full respray until then with car park door dinks liable from old biddies who don't give a rats ass!

or I might sod it all and go for a loony mobile if I find something with no real miles on the clock...

how about you?

well, much to the hate of most on here im a Jap head at heart, and i have a Suzuki Swift GTI which iv owned for over 11 years now, well infact it was my first ever car and it has had more money spent on it than i wanna remember
and also its sen more sets of wheels and paint jobs then i wanna remember too hehe

at the moment its as you say retired to garage duties and i intend to keep the car even tho i am probably getting too old to drive it (its very in your face and very highly tuned) but it holds a very special place in me and is the best car i ever owned, it really is

its a H reg 1990, and is absolutly mint, must be the last in UK in the standard its in, only 1 other owner too, with FSH and always had mobil oil all its life, 156 bhp too, want to import the turbo kit for it really and use it on the 1/4 mile

iv had a few cars as second cars, and the company cars iv had are always VW's, had 2 mk 4 GTI's, currently got a Mk 4 GTTDI 150 with full leather, zenons, 17 inch santa monicas etc, awesome car and suprisingly a real head turner which alot of people comment on too. i rarly bring it home tho and usually just use it whilt at work

my old man also has a mk 4 GTI Turbo in black with black leather and all the extras etc which he bought from new, so yeah im pretty big on Golfs.

next for me tho...Hmmmm really dont know, with running club nights i need a car i can just leave without worrying too much so a daily is always required ( currently my trusted mk 3 GTI).. think ill kleep it till it blows up.hehe

in a ideal world a mitsubishi evo is what i want, the current model or even better still the forth coming all new version which is just fantastic....but they are mega £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£ to buy and also run

I need to buy another house soon so i think a new car wont be happening for a long time..

nice little collection of cars that you have had/have... like the sound of your work mk4...

not really a jap head myself... in fact not at all... although a friend has just got a new civic which is schweet!  (and a joy to detail for them... but don't tell them that!)

have had a poultry collection of cars myself in comparison to you... had a mk1 Y reg 1.1 C in 1992... then moved onto a GTE followed closely by a calibra which I kept standard and got to 150k+, was a lovely car but was getting tired... so when someone offered my the mkIII I lept at the chance... especially as it was FREEEE!

so i can now afford to spend a bit of money on the golf without feeling too guilty... don't want to take it too far away from standard but my wish list is growing ever longer!

yo swift look great... lovely detailing on it too!  don't think i have the knowledge to bring a car that far along myself  :undecided:

Post by: kells on 17 October 2007, 23:07
Thanx for that re the swift, like i say not many dub heads can bring themselves to pay a little respect for it, if you saw how it flys you would know what i mean... it is evil

i will get some pics of the company car (golf GTTDI 150) and post them up for u to look at, will have to give it a clean as its just been into the main dealer, they washed it against our wishes and didnt dry it, looks a mess!!

Oh almost forgot, also had a brief encounter with a mk 2 gti 16v, was owned by a firend in all honesty but i kind of had it for a month or 2, whilst my mate was away totally standard black 3 door J Reg, was very nice, minter too, i remember it costing just short of 6k, this was around 1997/98. it had FSH etc 1 owner who was a guy in the navy..
wonder where that car is now ?? hehe

As for my Mk 3, trying to keep mine standard, gonna lower it, its got hella twin headlights and iv got a mongoose st st for itas my standard pipe has developed a tiny hole in it, got the mongoose for 45 quid.. bargain!!!!

you got yours for free!!! blimey that is good..

they're great pics.. don't know what you're worried about... actually i do a bit as I get all nervous about showing 'too much' detail when detailing hasn't been done

nice motors though... the mk4 looks like a real sleeper

which one do you prefer to drive?

have you thought about smoked crystals for the front of your mk3?

the mk 4 is a nicer drive i think, hard question to answer really as i like them both for different reasons, mk 4 is really fast ...and i mean that, i was so suprised by it...and its super smooth to drive, would be the best to live with day to day,  but i like the rawness of the mk 3 8v for some reason and i always have liked the look of mk 3 GTI's too (and im usually a dedicated 16v person btw) and i also find m 8v to be fairly fast, again, i was very suprised

as for the crystal lights, i did think about it but i dont really like the normal crystals as they look too lexus and plastiky for my liking and they leak too
But smoked ones are ok i guess, i just really want to keep it looking standard, i did think about standard units smoked but i do like them as they are (again, its coz i like the mk 3 as it is in standard form) next on list is a decent coilover set up, and to get my mongoose st/st fitted
and a few dents it had on it when i got it are been removed soon too.

Other than that i really want to try my best to leave it as it is hehehehe  we will see
