Im interested in gaz`s gearbox if its for a 16v but he is not sure if its an 8 or 16, whats the differences, any tell tale signs on em or whats the part numbers on them?
cheers dan

if you have an 8v engine wouldnt a 16v box be a bonus? speed wise ???
-
dont think will help speed wise, i think the 16v gets its speed cause it revs higher than the 8v, but what would i know!! lol he he ??? come on gotta be some one who knows how to identify difference ei part number etc and where to find??
is rich out there?? he's the gearbox man!!

I'm here ;)
The ratio's are obviously different to match the different characteristics of each engine. I don't think there is any advantage to be gained by sticking a 16v box on an 8v engine, but I stand to be corrected.
I'll have to delve into my ETKA to find you the part numbers, which may take a while as its not working at the moment, for some unknown reason. I'll have a quick look in my Bentley and see what that says.

Ok, got something for you..........5 minutes and I'll have a chart uploaded

Here you go, hopefully this will help:-

The 16v and 8v 020 gearboxes are interchangeable, the 16v uses a larger input shaft so you have to use a 16v clutch. They are said to be stronger ???.

So whatever gearbox i put on my 16v mk2 wont really matter then?
-
Well it'll work, but as Steve says, you will have to match the clutch with the gearbox as the splines are a different diameter.
-
Well the garage near me said they will trake mine out and fit a new one for 105 so am trying to geta gearbox now, was gonna do it myself but my mk1 needs some work doing on it now due to idiotic drivers >:( so need a car on road, as am being sulked at for having to broke cars now ;D
