Title: Our Golf GTI Project
Post by: CelicaSi on 12 October 2007, 10:15
All

We have decided to do a project car. We have picked a Golf GTi as the project. The GTi was bought for £300 and is a CAT C write off.

The damage to the car was only paint work, it looks like some one has tried to pour paint striper on the roof, bonnet and down the doors.

The car itself is mechanically sound and just needs a good clean. So its only the body work we are going to modifiy for the first stage.

Myself, and three others are the ones that will be putting the money behind the project, we will be putting £50 per month for mods etc.

We have decided to keep the car to a budget, and the budget is £2000 to spend on modifications etc...

Date Bought: Friday 21st September 2007
Price Purchased: £300
Project Budget: £2000

Future Modifications

Car Colour:
Dragon Green with a Gold Pearl
Bump strips and GTI body kit will be satin black with green pearl.

Exterior:
VW Vento frontend (lights, bonnet, grill, bumper, slam panel)
Remove side repeaters and add LEDs to the GTi kit.
After market wingmirrors
Transport vent in the drivers wing
Audi handles
Removed and smooth rear wiper
After market rear lights
Crystal front fogs and lights.

Interior:
Steering Wheel
Gear Knob and Gaitor
Handbrake and Gaitor
Roll Cage
New carpets
Removed rear seats and interior
2 bucket seats
gauges

Wheels And Suspension:
We havent decided on wheels but we are going for 17s
Uprated shocks and springs probably lowered to 60mm

Engine:
Competation cat to back exhaust (mild steel)
Decent air feed and filter
Servicing
Replace hoses with samco hoses
Engine bay clean up

Well thats just a rough guide at what we are wanting to do, this may change as the months go by lol.

First update

Friday 21st - Saturday 22nd

Bought car on the friday and did the following work over friday and saturday.

Removed front bumper, bonnet, grill, lights
Removed interior (seats, dash plastics, door cards)
Removed wing mirrors, side repeaters, both front wings
Removed rear wiper, rear lights, spoiler
Removed GTI body kit (plastic arch's, sideskirts, bump stripes)

When we removed the body kit we found that the passenger side rear arch was rotten, and it needs to be replaced.

After we stripped the car, we seen an ad on a local forum advertising another MK3 Gti, only this one was a 5 door, but it had the following mods already done to it.

2 sets of shocks and springs (bilstien + Gmax i think)
17" 7 Spoke Alloys in black

So we enquired about the car, and we bought it for £200, and we are using it as a doner car.

The next stage was removing interior and dash

When we decided on putting a Vento frontend on we have been looking about for the bits that is needed.  But again we struck lucky, and found someone who has a full vento for sale for £50.  The vento is a none runner but it has the parts we need to fit the frontend onto the golf.

Not bad for £50 ;)

After stripping the interior out of the Project Golf we goto work fitting the new(old) dash from the doner golf.  The dash in the project golf was very tatty.

As we are doing this on a budget, we are getting members from my site (http://www.ne-cruisers.co.uk) to help with the project, we have Pete from PPS Motorsport helping with the prep and paintwork and we have been givin a few things from members including these seats.

Blimey, you have a knack for picking up cheap motors. That's 3 for less than £500!

The dash was all dull and scratched, TBH we probably could of got away with leaving it in but we wanted to try a bit of everything in the project.  I moved it to the other side of the unit and theres something rattling about behind the dash LOL so its gonna have to come out again aahh the fun.

I dont think I posted this but, the sil's and passenger side rear arch are rotten, so we had replacements donated by PPMotorsport (Pete is a good friend and also a member on our site).  So we are going to attempt to weld the replacements.

The wheels are going to be refurbed, both the originals and the 17s.

I will keep you all upto date as and when I get more piccys of the work.

I forgot to add the following.

This is the work we carried out last night, pictures are from my phone so are a little dark lol.

But we just secured the lights and bonnet onto the golf to see what it would look like.

Why not stick this in the project section or the Dub Rides section, then it'd be easier to find.

Looks like a fun project. Keep up the good work.
