Hey to all - hope you don't mind giving a newbie some help over here :)
After much looking around, I'm looking at getting a 3 door Golf Mk2 16v Gti - only trouble is I've no idea what age I should be looking at. Is there anything i'll need to consider regarding age - eg. difficulties with certain modifications, known problems/issues, or things I should be looking to avoid etc...
Any help would be gladly appreciated :)

Hi there, check out the golf buying guide on www.matey-matey.com
Hope that helps
-
yeah thats a good link the matey matey one. obviously you pays your money but 1500 uopwards should get you a straight one, 2 - 3000 an absolute minter!
-
Good stuff, thanks for the link :)
I'm looking at the best part of ?2000, got a budget of ?3000 but theres stuff like security and ICE that I'm trying to include in that figure. I'm guessing a 1.6 is the way to go, right?
-
no. 1.8 :D
-
Gti's only came in 1.8 form for both 8 and 16v, the only 1.6 gti was the original mk1!
1.6 mk 2's are carburettor generally
-
check for crunching gearboxes as this seems to be a common fault with 16v`s
-
and 8v's ^ >:(
check for seized rear calipers on all gti mk2's aswel. Its the handbreak mechanism that seizes
-
yeah the second gear synchromesh thing
-
lets not put him off lol
ohh and leaky door membrains (piss easy to fix) ;)
when u pick one up, have a look for a mist in the windows. if there is a mist then you have leaky door membrain thingys ;D

and smoke in the exhaust when you boot it! fllow the buying guide and you will be fine, if in doubt take a mechanic or someone in the know. welcome to the world of dubbing! ;)
-
when you get out on a test drive, find a car park or open space and do a few circles on full lock, check for knocking noises which is a sign of shagged driveshafts / cv joints.
be prepared to get addicted..... ;D

Thanks for the tips guys - I read over that buying guide and mostly makes sense to me. I've a friend mechanic who also owns a Mk2 so i'll be dragging him along to make sure everythings in order :)
