Title: wobbly gearstick + gaiter
Post by: giorgio1712 on 10 October 2007, 20:02
Will the guide in the FAQ, the one where you need the kit for £5 or whatever stop my gearstick from having lots of play in it when its in gear?

Also where can I get a new gaiter as mines ripped, are they easy to fit?

Yep, and ECP or GSF stock them.

Can't find the gaiters anywhere, any idea what section they will be in?

Plenty of replacement gators on eBay, leather and alcantara versions.

Is the play side to side or back and forth?  If the latter it is the relay shaft ball, and that is a VAG or scrappy job if you want a full replacement.

Hi Im going to fit the same kit. I thought I'd buy the one from GSF. Had a look at the guide and was wondering if it applies to 16v gti mines a 1991.

Sorry haven't helped with your questions giorgio!

If I manage to find time to fit the linkage kit soon I'll tell you how it went and what affect its had.

want to ask a chap on here, m4rk i think he's called... i think! he does a part that compliments the kits really well, replaces the bright orange ball with a much tighter peice and makes the shif 100% better!

i did this, takes all of half an hour if that, makes a massive difference and its cheap and noticeable! cant go wrong!

im reletivly sure that the 16v uses the same bush kit, but ask at the factors and they will let you know.

Hello! Someone mention my name?

If the play is side to side you're problem is your plastic gearlinkages, pattern ones from GSF are your best bet. I'll still sell you a relay shaft bush though!

mk2mark's balls are much bigger and tougher  no seriously! and the relay shaft bush is better too!

Thanks!

I think

But yeah, mine are nylon as opposed to polyurethane which means they're more positive feeling and longer wearing. I've also made them a very tight fit in there, tighter than other replacement bits - I was worried at the start that they might be too tight and foul on some cars, but I'm happy to report no one's come back to say that.

grab your gearstick & lift it upwards, if there is alot of up/down movement the ball housing under the car is worn, this can add a fair bit of side to side movement as well :)
