Not sure, but I would asume that a GL is a carb engine and standard seats, and a GTi has injectors and seats with bolsters.

But a GLi in america is equivalent to a british GTi.

Getting confusing....

The one i'm looking at is a GL, its not got the sports seats but thats not a problem as i have a set of cobra's.
As for the carb instead of the injection, is it still tunable??
And does anyone know the power output please??

the 1.8 carb enginde is just as if not more tuneable than the injection engine. it has 90bhp as standard.
the most common thing to do is fit a 8v gti cam or head/cam , uprated webber carb and gti exhaust system and manifold.
with all these done you should see over 100bhp i should think.
better still stick twin webbers on it and a good aftermarket exhaust and manifold and you should be leaving 8v gti in you wake.

Ah thats a cracking bit of information, just what i was after.  Thanks.

Good place to start then it would seem, a mate of mine has a few Gti 16v parts knocking about so should be able to rob some of those for it..

I'll have a proper look once i've sorted the knocking drive shaft then.

16v downpipe is bigger bore than the 8v so grab it if he has one. you'll need an 8v manifold though.

post some pics up too, I love jettas.

You can also use a k-jet gti dizzy as it has a better advance curve apparantly which should help out a bit

If you really wanted to you could even throw a 2.0 bottom end onto it

Looking to collect it next weekend with any luck so will get plenty of pics up in here then.

I'll be on the hunt around in here too for the rest of the bits i need to pump up that 90 bhp....

When fitted with a GTI cam yes, the old GL dizzy advance curve wont match to the GTI cam.  If you do fit a GTI cam you need to make a new 6degree BTDC mark on the flywheel and time it to that to get the most out of it :)
