Title: Clay bars... They are awesome!!
Post by: Conker on 03 October 2007, 11:53
Just wanted to do a quick post to say that I used a clay bar for the first time this weekend and was VERY VERY impressed.  I thought it might have been on of those overly-hyped products you get with car cleaning, but I was wrong.

It leaves your paint feeling like glass, easily taking off tar spots etc. that I couldn't even remove with my fingernail!! I used Sonus Green which apparently is gentle enough to prevent any scratching.

My clay looked like this afterwards:

Good effort, what did you use as lubricant?

My Mrs got the Mags quick details kit which has the thier clay and lubricant in it. Worked wonders on the 30 year old paint on her mini.

Mmmmm... Lubricant.

If you mean what lubricant I used with the clay, well I was a cheap skate and didn't buy any quick detailer or anything like that as I read that soapy water is fine. I used Autoglym body shampoo mixed as per normal with water and then a few drops neat on each panel if needed. It worked absolutely fine and saved a lot of money - it did eventually disintgrate the clay, but only after I'd completely finished the car, although having never used clay before, I don't know if it does this anyway.

megs quick clay kit is the only way to go on this one... works a treat.

use PLENTY of megs quick detailer spray to lube your clay....

whatever you use though you're bound to get a result... found clay for the first time this summer... wish I had found it years ago

To be honest the clay was used up anyway - I'd only used half a bar for the whole car and it had a lot of grit in it, I doubt I would have used it again.

Buying individual bars of Sonus of the web is about £6, whereas the Megs kit for example is loads more.

I was reading on detailingworld.co.uk that some pro detailers mix water into their detailer to make it go further, while still giving a good lube, so if your trying to save a few quid like me I guess you could do that.

Interested to see if this would work as I have a Meguiars quick clay kit that I havent used yet ?

Sonus green is a better clay, the Megs (2 versions) is quite harsh and can (and often does) leave micro marring of the paint.

You should always use a proper clay lube to get the best out of it.

However, if you already have it, then use that.

Dont forget to do a decent 2 bucket wash first and another 2 bucket wash after.

Claying is fun.
