Title: 16v exhaust sytstem. Help to loud!
Post by: edd16v on 02 October 2007, 20:26
Hi guys,

Im new to this site and to owning a mk2 golf. Previously owned a Mk3 8v gti and just bought a mk2 16v 1991.
The car Ive bought has a full magnex system including manifold with twin upswept tail pipes. The problem I have is I do quite a few motorway miles and the noise is unbearable! Firstly has anyone else found this with the 16v with magnex system?

Im going to change the exhaust but want to find one that sounds nice but is not loud (it doesn't need to be deafaning to sound nice.) I had a friend with a corrado that had a supersprint system on and that seemed quite nice. Anyone got one of these on there mk2 16v?

Has anyone got any suggestions on which exhaust to go for? Also any idea if a different system will bolt onto the magnex manifold??

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Jetex are fairly quiet, or get a custom longlife style one, had one on a calibra with large silencers and was quieter than standard but still flowed better.

Supersprint are nice and quiet when you want them to be (only experienced them on an 8v though). I had the 2 silencer system and my dad has the 3 silencer, both are nice and quiet on the motorway and around town. They make a nice noise when you boot it though!

Other option is a standard system, VW though, not quikfit!

You might be better off just changing manifold, as thats going to be generating alot of noise. Once you have done that, then see how it sounds, mine has the same zorst as yours and isn't that bad.

I was hoping that wasn't the case as that must be the hardest piece of exhaust to change. I guess I'll have to take it to a garage as Im not sure I'll be able to do it with it up on axle stands!!

I still want either a milltek or supersprint so more opinions on these would be appreciated!

Thanks

I haven't had a car with a Miltek, but when i've heard them they sound very nice! If my budget could stretch to a Miltek then i'd get one over the Supersprint, mainly for the looks. If however you're on a budget like me, Supersprint systems come up second hand more often than Miltek.

miltek if you want to keep the factory tailpipe look

supersprint if you want something a wee bit different. supersprint with all the silencers is will be as quiet as standard

:smiley:Ok so I've done it!! I've ordered a full supersprint exhaust, I went for the one with 3 silencers and twin round taipipes. Just hope it sorts the problem out. I did go down to VW dealership to find out how much the full exhaust system would be from them and it was as much as the supersprint.

I didn't want to go for a standard system anyway because my 16v has a GTI engineering 1900 lump in it so I thought restricting the flow to much might mess about with the tuning on the engine.

I'll let you know how it goes and whether it actually makes the car better on the motorway.

Anyone want to buy the old magnex system!! Its nice and loud! ha ha

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Edd

I used to have a Jetex stainless steel on my 16v.  Know what you mean about too loud - motorways especially.  Have had supersprint 3 piece/silencer system on for about 2 months and it's way better!  Nice and quite around town and when steady on the motorway. But yes, when you put your foot down it sounds good - still not as loud as the Jetex, but that's a good thing. The supersprint is a lot easier to live with than the jetex.

Waited four weeks for my lovely new exhaust system to turn up, its arrived but only has the back box and decat pipe! Can't believe it I'll have to call the company tomorrow and complain!!

It should be so easy and mess ups like this really wind me up. Oh well sh!t happens.

I'll let you know how the exhaust sounds when I finally get it fitted.
