Post by: gti fly bye on 04 March 2004, 16:27
I am just about to put the head back on my mk2 8v Hreg, now, every ones been tellin me to use some red instant gaskett as well as the normal gaskett???

Is this right? it wasnt included in the gaskett set? Shall i just use the normal gaskett out of the pack?? ???

You should only need to use the gasket, however, I have heard it's a good idea to put some gasket sealant in the corner where the oil hole is, as it is a known weakness and can be prone to leaking slightly.

Having said that, I've never used any gasket sealant........I've done a few now and not had any problems.

What ever you do, make sure your bolt holes that the head bolts screw into are totally clean and clear of fluid/oil etc., the hydraulic action of torquing a head bolt can destroy a perfectly good block!!

ALL workshop manuals say NEVER use additional sealant on a headgasket.

Couldn't agree more, which is why I have never used it. The only reason that I mentioned the gasket sealant in the corner was that a VW specialist, years back, told me about the weakness and that they always did it. I wondered if thats what everyone thats been telling 'gti fly bye' to use it, meant :-\
