I was driving upto Stafford on the M6 behind a BMW doing about 85 when a black 07 plate Volvo came up behind at about 90-95mph. The BMW saw this and pulled over to the middle lane. Looked in my rearview mirror wondering whether it was an unmarked police car, but saw a couple in the front and what looked like holiday luggage in the back so I carried on. I picked up my speed as it was staying behind me and decided to let it go past by pulling into the middle lane. However, the Volvo also pulled in behind a car that was behind me. I thought wtf are these guys playing at? So I just carried on and overtook the next car I saw and maintained my speed in the third lane - doing about 90-95 at this point which I normally don't do unless the traffic is sparse and I feel its safe. Next thing I know I see blue and white flashing lights behind me - its the bl00dy Volvo. I thought shyte, thats the end of my clean license... and then began to wondering what they'd clocked me on. They were polite enough and showed me a speed of 92.74mph over 0.7 miles - they were so polite I thought they were going to let me off - especially when the policewoman asked me I had a clean license. Fat chance of that. Got a £60 fine and 3 points on the stop.
Fair enough, I had been speeing but the only thing that annoyed me was the way they had 'pushed' me and almost goaded me into driving that bit faster so I wouldn't have to make way for them - I even tried to let the w8nkers go past... Still can't argue as I was caught over a stretch doing an average speed that was too high. Makes me paranoid everytime I'm on the road now. The thing that really gets me is the fact that the law views my car as equivalent to an old banger that can probably double as a skip... the reaction times of drivers might be the same, but braking distance sure isn't...
-
If you aren't breaking the law you have nothing to be paranoid about

unfortunatly the cops are always on the lookout for hot hatch's, i know what your saying about egging you on, my missus was egged on at a set of traffic lights, Traffic unit was parked along side, and was edging foward and looking at my wife and smiling to get her to blast off. Bunch of goverment grabbing b&stards

Maybe they were trying to see if you had xenons fitted Phil

Sorry to hear about it mate
Its bad they made you speed up in that way. That or the couple have just scammed their way into a tidy profit for their first night out on holiday
I'm always keeping a look out for what could be unmarked police cars
Especially volvos
Paranoid as they come, me
-
Sorry to hear that Illyun.
I bet they have to drink fcuking gallons of Horlicks at night
I'm heading up north in the morning and so will be hyper paranoid now
Maybe I'll even keep to the speed limit on the motorway
-
Sorry to hear it mate. You live and learn.
-
Sorry to hear this - It's really not fair. Most motorway traffic travels in the high 80's and pushing you isn't on. I got 'pushed' like this once by a single cop who was then kind enough to tell me to watch my speed and didn't book me. Afterall, you were being considerate by pressing on to let him through.
I've got 6pts - Both for exactly 93mph on dry dual carriageway.

I once got asked the same question (overtaking in a 1983 950 Popular Fiesta - ran out of puff (relevant comment I'm sure you will appreciate) and didn't get back in before the double white lines started).
I'm not sure what the right answer is:
Say nothing and they think you're ignorant and book you anyway
Lie and say you've got 9 points and it'll probably mean a ban - anybody said this whether they have 9 points or not?
Lie and say you've got 6 points
Tell them the truth - didn't work for me or Illyun
Tell them you're not sure
The reason I ask is that there must be a reason for asking you - is it in case you have 9 points and therefore the fixed penalty option isn't open to them?

I'm not sure why they'd ask you but surely lying is never going to be the right answer?
They're just gonna find out and you're going to get in worse trouble!

Thanks for comments guys. I decided there and then not to be an ass and contest it... they were only doing their job even if the circumstances were dubious. At the end of the day, I did have a choice - like that BMW driver who got lucky/wised up - and I couldn't really argue the toss with them or the courts. Who knows, it might actually save my life / limbs by making me that much more alert on the road.
-
Lucky I didn't have my 'personalised' personalised number plates on     Otherwise I might really have landed in hot water... E30 VW for those of you remember... the plates are lying in the garage.
-
If you had 9 points they would know off their database and would probably check if you said that you had got 9 points. They may just end up giving you 9 points
-
Afraid my best was 99.78  on the A69 eastbound some years ago in an Audi A4 1.8 T Sport. Got an SP60 and (only) a £60 fine
Paid up very smartish and not contested
Luckily nothing since and never speeded again
Unmarked Volvo it was

out if interest iIlyun; how far off your bumper were they sat? surely if they were within the recommended 2 second rule then you could make a complaint for pushing you  their in car camera should show how close they were.
might be worth a shot if you want to persue (sp) it :undecided:
-
i had a run in with an umarked skoda  the other day - as i was driving onto the m40 there was a new skoda in front of me and a lorry in the right had side of the slip road - so the skoda under took the lorry, so i followed (was in the bora) and udertook the lorry then put my toe down to get past the skoda as we moved on to the motorway - shot off into the third lane doing about 95 by now - next thing the skoday comes up in the middle lane and pulls along side me - its a copper!!! he just wags a finger at me!!! i slow down and he goes past! lucky i think, but as he undertook the lorry i doubt he could have a go at me!

hmm, hard to tell but yes they were a bit closer than 2 seconds away as we were driving quite fast...

Jammy git  I have had enough luck so I can't really complain. What Rhyso has mentioned it interesting though. I might investigate further. By the Rhyso, I have received the microcan cable - thanks a lot...

Did you notice that the Volvo's "daylights" were off? That's how I clocked an unmarked Volvo near home a few months ago. Sadly I clocked it a bit too late as I was done for 98.2 average over 2.2 miles..think it took hime that long to catch up.
However, if you're in the North London/Herts area watch out for unmarked Skoda VRs and a bronze coloured unbadged Audi A6 diesel, also unbadged BMW 535d's! These are not used by Traffic but by the police driver training school. Got "flashed" by the coverts on the Audi for overtaking him when he didn't accelerate out of a 40 up to the 60 limit (and I did). Ho hum.

Damn what happened to the days where we just had to look out for Vauxhall omega's????
