Well guys and gals,
Time for a bit of fun.
IF VAG did not exist (heaven forbid) and you were restricted to ONLY a choice of cars from above as a daily runaround, which would you choose and why! Comparisons to VAG allowed
-
i'd walk tbh
if pushed i'd probably go for the Ford :undecided:
what would you chose then Hurdy?

My vote went with the Ford (reluctantly!), I've test driven them all (except Civic)as I like to waste salespeeps time....errr... make a judgement on which car I should think about
Megane feels like you are having your spine taken out through your backside everytime you go over a bump...and in Sheffield there are plenty of bumps!
MPS actually wasn't too bad drivingwise and gave a huge punt when the throttle is stabbed. Doesn't look too bad with the sportpack addenda. Unfortunately when you turn the wheel it keeps going straight on and it is too softly sprung, plus the interior is truely awful .
VXR - I must agree with Clarkson that it pulls towards the pavement when you drop the hammer. Inside was better than I thought, but feels rather claustrophobic.
Civic - Haven't had the chance to drive one yet. Didn't like the old one and so the new one with the cheaper suspension will most likely be worse anyway.
ST - Bit too softly sprung, doesn't feel fast, inside is cheaper looking, but it does handle quite well. I also liked the 5 cylinder quattrolike burble. I wouldn't have one as it does look too chav and they are fast approaching chavavailability levels in price.
-
The Megane wins it hands down for me. Forgetting the fact it will go wrong, the handling and pace are awesome.
I seriously considered one but I just can't get on with those looks. And it feels cheap compared to the Golf.
-
i would rather boil my own head in a pot of horse piss!
-
Id rather have one of these...
and this one would be faster then any of the choices by time ive put a 2nd battery in it
-
Agree - none of the above with my own money.
Golf GT TDI or a Porsche Boxster S/Cayman S:wink:
Cass
-
None of the above. The cars listed are a class below VW .
-
well i would have to go with the honda civic as i test drove 1, 90 minutes before i signed for the golf. in my own opinion the honda is the best out of the bad bunch given. :undecided:
-
Would be the focus but the prices are dropping drastically and they are to thirsty.
Had the old shape CTR for 9 months and hated it.
Drove a megane, they are OK but french.
MPS looks dreadfull.
So for me the only one left is the Astra, then again its a Vauxhall.....so ST for me.
-
Death
The only option to be honest
On looks alone, hands down it'd be the Astra (de-badged of course  )
But I think I'd go for the Civic, for its engine
-
Reluctant St vote here. Love the orange colour, but the lack of cruise control and the fact it's a ford would put me off.
-
The new ctr is boring imho other than the spaceship looks, the rear beam suspension and same power engine is a huge letdown from honda! I would go for the meganne 225 for sheer pace, handling and rareity!
-
i think if someone would find the ford focus ST forum and put, which hothatch would you go for given the same choice
link removed
Anyone tempted too??
-
ok couldnt resist. have done the dirty deed. this will be interesting............worth keeping tabs on

link don't work  do you have to register to read the threads??
-
if it doesnt work then yes, there are already nearly a dozen responces already!!!
-
might pop in for a nosey later on
-
Renaultsport Megane 230 FI Team R26 (If I had the money to get ANY of the above cars).
I signed up to the Focus board, want to see what they saw lol :D
Great idea Phil lol
"Hi guys, if you had a choice of buying another hot hatch (except the ST of course!)"
lmao !
-
i love the vxr! just looks mean!! think the megane is the best drivers car! :undecided:
-
Saw a black Megane with black rims the other day. It looked mean  , really ferocious, savage (especially compared to my little lamb, but also to black-on-black Ed30). And the sound from its exhaust was clearly purposeful  as well. If not Ed30, I'd go for Megane. :nerd:
-
HA HA!! Couldnt resist having a look... Great move there!
Good to see the R32 gets a bit of a mention seeing as it wasnt in the original list!!
-
HA HA I couldnt resist posting on there forum! Well spotted Phil.

I can't get on it... if you have to be registered I won't bother - can't stand Ford Shyte    ever since my father had an Escort in the 80s - what a pile of pooh...
-
ok, have just expanded my detective work to the lovelly Honda civic type R forum, see what sort of responce we get from them!
A interesting read so far from the Ford forum, majority all say GTi!
-
I may have also posted on the ford one too lol
-
Not a biased oppinion at all aland!,
-
Hmm wud like to know what the end result is from the Heros in their Hondas camp!! I have often heard an associate saying how he leaves both Gti's and R32's for dust from the lights!! Little does he know i have got one.. the twit
-
Looks like ive been rumbled, a post on the focus forum have been visiting our site aswell!! lol  .Nice to see about a dozen ST owners would have the golf GTi/ R32.
So far most honda owners would rather the Renault Megane or clio so far.
-
lol busted !
Interesting non the less.
-
Re: "Nice to see about a dozen ST owners would have the golf GTi/ R32.When i see one at the lights, giving me the look, ill know hes thinking" i wish i had one of those!"."
I'm an ST owner and i'll hardly be thinking that... I think the GTi is a lovely car but i also think the ST is as nice. Just because if i had to chose another car other than the one i have now and i chose a golf doesn't mean i'm really envious of you. I could have bought a GTi when i bought the ST but i just preferred the way the ST sounds and thought the slightly softer suspension would be good for motorway driving, even though the fuel economy is useless.
I can see the merits of all sorts of different cars and wouldn't rule out joining you guys in the Veedub camp next or even Audi, who knows.
-
Hey Golf people - ST owner here I'm afraid but regular mk5 GTi driver (works) too :)
Have to say I do like the GTi and would even go to say the handling is brilliant but preferred the Focus's 'package' so thats where my own money went. That said, I'm half considering a GTi for my wifes car in the future. Seen them for £17.5k from a supermarket which is a bit of a bargain.
So from your perspective - why did you buy the Golf over the other competition?
-
I think a lot of cars are bought on image and that applies to me too. Many hot hatches have a chavvy image  and that especially applies to the Civic and the Astra. I guess if I was 17 I'd overlook that :nerd:
The Golf GTi is a classless car thats driven by many different types of people, not just 18 year old guys in baseball caps. When I test drove the car I was instantly impressed, mostly by the performance and handling and thats what I was looking for. The look of the interior I feel however is step down from my previous BMW and not as good as a mk4 (which had awful handling) I'm more than happy though. If I hadn't have bought the Golf I'd have gone for an BMW 1 series (excellent interior and better styling than the Golf I think) or an A3. Out of those cars in the poll I do like the ST. I've never been into Fords but the ST does seem to have a similar image to the Golf in that its a great all rounder.
-
Im sorry but how many 17 year olds do you know that drive a ctr? A group 17 insurance car, costing £17k new with high running costs.....i sure dont know any, nor have i ever seen any chavs driving one (unless mr finance gave them a hand!)
Its funny how all forums have people who have their blinkers on and a sign saying 'my car is the best in the world!'. Each hothatch in the market at the mo has something different to offer for people i.e.;
gti - comfort, build quality
ctr - reliability, high revving n/a engine
vxr - handling, torque engine
st - noise, speed prospects
etc etc
Its interesting to see what people on each forum do go for and its generaly something similar to their own current car. I would go for the 197 myself as its n/a and looks great fun (definatly if they do a cup version!)
Every hothatch at the moment is great in some area and its these key points that sway people to spend their money, i get the feeling from some of these posts their are some snobbish people on here, the guy who thinks the st owner was thinking he had a gti is laughable, those 2.5 engines are capable of much higher power than the gti. I have driven both the gti and st and i found the st felt much better to drive, amazing noise and the engine felt great - my opinion though.
This could be a good thread if there were not such immature posts (people) in it, amusing how you mock the ctr and its chavvy image and yet many people on the ctr forum quite often say how good the gti is - which one would somene who had just joined think was the chavviest?

1) all the great reviews
2) test drive
3) first impression from seeing it
4) the looks!
I have nothing against ST, but it just seems too "teenager toy" to me, ASBO. Would never sink my money into it, ever.

Oh ok, only 99% of them are driven by chavs
I drove one of the original type R's and didnt like that at all. Felt like a 1.4 untill you hit 6000 revs and gearstick up in the air! Maybe the new one is better but it manages to look futuristic and dated at the same time.
-
I went for the large arse megane,as had no major probs with my clio 172cup,although i think the gti out classes everything with looks and technology.
Starting with the engine, which imo is less stressed than all the others, poss only ctr with no blow up's ever(no turbo though)comes close, but im sure with large amount of tuning to all cars, the golf would hold out best over 60,000 onwards.
DSG box, even renault with massive f1 exp dose'nt offer anything close with all 225's let alone the 230(no optional ex).
Last but not least, have you seen better xenons on any other car, fact!!!
GTI 4 EVA,fcuk the rest.

It feels like a 2 litre, i quite often dont need to use vtec to easily pull away from some quick cars. Fair enough if you dont like it though, no probs!
All i know is the ctr is quicker round the top ger track - nuff said  lol

No disrespect but so what if it is... if I wanted a fast car round a track I would by an Evo or Porsche... 1-2 seconds quicker round a track are meaningless when you take into account what these cars are used for - daily driving... and in this area the GTI is peerless... and thats why you have one too
-
I felt like lowering to some other people in this thread - that is all
-
Have to agree with Jkctr about some snobbish comments in this thread. I certainly don't think my golf is a class above the rest. I'd need an aston martin for that
Picked the GTI cos its white and pulls it off unlike wannabes like corsa sxi's. Also the amount of time spent on M-ways. The turbo is much more flexible than my rx-8 which like the ctr doesn't come to life till 6000rpm. Certainly never felt the Golf was a class above the rex.
If u ask me, i'd think VW, Ford and Vauxhall are chavviest due to the number of previous models. You guys must have seen tossers drive around towns in MK3 GTI's etc... with the loud subs BOOMING!
AIn't seen one civic type-r do that tbh. Sure they drive fast, but ones i seen do that are on M-ways and national speed areas, certainly not round town like what chavs would do in saxos etc.

It means very little as i was only joking mate! I very much doubt the deciding factor for someone to buy a car is based on the topgear test times lol

I know you were!! I was just joking back!! lol
p.s. I think some people take those track times more serious than we think.. They should probably use a more challenging track anyway.. maybe like 5th gear with a few inclines chucked in for good measure :nerd:
-
Technically they cant even prove it was the same person who drove the cars seeing as the stig isnt real
-
vxr if my arm was twisted badly....
i don't do renaults or fords
not really into mazdas and put off the hondas when i drove the s-type

Had an RS225 Megane for 12 months and did 12500 miles in 2004 with no faults and one recall. Sadly the depreciation was totally shocking and would put me off buying another one, though in this survey of alternative vehicles to the GTI, it would be my choice!
-
Drove the 225 F1 before getting the the GTI. Loved the handling out of the box, sure it was firm, but no more so than an eibach set up i guess. But that meant the handling was great, seats were supportive, dash was too boring. Wasn't bothered with depreciation cos you could slash of 2k list anyway. So 16K for GTI power and handling with all the gadgetry too. Main thing that put me off was the amount of rattling trim. Only 2k miles, but sure it was a demo, still that gave me signs to walk away. Can't stand rattling cars. Saying that, my damn GTI rattles over some surfaces and it comes from the rear armrest when its folded up. Any people on here have the same fault?
-
i think ive heard that too, its a squeeking noise noise, normally get someone fat to sit on the rear seat to fix it!!!
