hey guys
put my 90' gti 8v in for the delight that is the MOT and she failed but not too badly sort of...........
headlamp misaligned
handbrake cable needs adjustment
rear wheel bearing shot
manifold blowing
the guy has given me a price of £720 worst case senario if cant get manifold bolts off and need to take head off.
the price includes new cambelt and tensioner also.
he seems to think other than what its failed on the car is sound, little bit of surface rust but very solid car.
what you think guys worth it or not??
-
initial impression was fook me thats steep!
headlamp 5 min job
handbrake cable adjustment 5 minute job
the wheel bearing is straight forward - an hour or so??? and the cost about a £10.
that manifold is costing you about £600!!!
still seems steep to me!
-
so £600 for the head coming off and new cambelt etc is too high??
-
well if that is worst case scenario and a manifold bolt snaps, and they have to take the head off and use a stud extractor or worse drill and tap it out then it is going to cost quite a bit, but 720 is a lot of money, just go to a local scrappers and get yourself a manifold and diy it save yourself 600 quid, or even spend that money on a stainless one

put it this way...
the mechanic I use, took the head off a zafira last week, and replaced all piston rings and rebuilt it in 6hours.
I (and I'm certainly NOT a mechanic  ) could take the head off of my valver and replace the manifold in a couple of hours.
Saying that it would be trickier if some studs snap but still easily "doable" yourself.
Just get everything you need and might need of things go wrong, and crack on, you have 14days AFAIK to get it retested for free.

That is a steep price. I had studs break on me. Just removed them with an eezee out and replaced it.
Wish I lived in the UK. I could save you guys a fortune!!
