Title: Mp3 cd changer for Golf mk4
Post by: tej on 27 September 2007, 14:29
Ok, in a bit of a pickle, recently bought 2.0 Gti Golf mk4

I basically wanna listen to mp3 cd's in my car, but rather than changing the head unit (due to it having matching colour lights to the rest of the dials)

I thought about buying a MP3 cd changer, I had a look around on some websites, and they saw 2 of these cd changers are only compatible with the standard unit.

is this true? is there any others which are compatible? do you have a mp3 cd changer with the standard unit? are they easy to install ?

they may well work but i expect you'll have limited functionality of the unit as the MKIV headunits were never designed to run MP3's.  for example if you have your music in folders / playlists it will probably be able to only move through the first five; a bit like the iPOD link.

I've got a Phatbox in the boot which holds all my MP3's; a bit bulky but works well.

www.phatnoise.com for more info; think you can pick them up from Ebay for around £120.

otherwise the only other option is to get an after market H/U for full MP3 functionality  :undecided:

I got my Golf about three months ago and was in exactly the same situation - wanted to keep the illumination colour but wanted MP3 functionality.

In the end I just opted for swapping over the head unit to one where you can change the illumination colour to red. Pioneer DEH-P55BT was what i settled on. (Has built in bluetooth as a bonus, does MP3 and  all the other usuals)

Worth considering this option as you will get more features from the MP3's i.e track titles, song info etc...

i have the alpine mp3 changer in my mk 3, really good it is... running it off a alpine cda 9853 which in standard form has the mk 4 colour way Blue and red, but you can choose from over 500 colour ways, if you wanna keep the standard head unit, it is possible as im doing the same in a mk 4 but not with a mp3 changer tho
you need to get a seperate connection box wand they can cost upto £100
