Phil

I live in Southampton too - and South Coast Tints (Ocean Village) did the tints on my GTI three weeks ago. I watched while they did it - lots of car of attention, they treated my 5 day old car with respect - and I got the impression they'd have done the same if I hadn't been there.

B pillar back cost me just under £180. Check out www.sctints.co.uk (http://www.sctints.co.uk), they have some really good videos on the site showing what they do, and if you get an online quote there's a web discount.

The tints are guaranteed for as long as I have the car, and I could choose the level on tint on the day - I picked the light one which looks really good on my Diamond Black GTI. I'll take some pics tomorrow and get them posted.

I do agree looking at the pic below, cus the ammount of black already on the car ie side skirts, door pillar, a shade of black would look good, i dont wanna totally go black, i think a medium shade will be good

Title: Re: Aftermarket tints
Post by: Phil mcavity on 27 September 2007, 12:12
ben already has a sports bucket seat with neck support!!, you may be able to see it in the photo below, isofix is very good, but boy oh boy its expensive, but yes the price to pay for your childs safety isnt an issue.
Ben thinks the S mode on the dsg means SMILE MODE , cus daddy drives fast!, mummys to scared to put it in S MODE!

Ok, I've been out to take some pics:

This is before (and clean!)

This is after (tinted but very dirty)!

As you can see, the light tint is very subtle from some angles, but looks quite dark from others - and particularly in dull whether. I like it because it's not 'in yer face' and doesn't make much difference from inside - looking back, it's obviously a more sophisticated look, but doesn't affect clarity of vision, even at night.

Hope this helps!

Thanks - that's what I wanted, although mine seem a little less 'green'. I saw my car beside an Ed30 with factory tints before I picked it up on 1 Sep - and kicked myself for not choosing the factory option. I'm really happy with the results, sets the car off nicely.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I think it was light smoke. The guy at the tinting place called it the 'light' tint, it came out of a Sun-Gard box.

Phil

I've wondered that since it was done. It certainly wouldn't make it any more dangerous in terms of visibility, but there's a video on the South Coast Tints site that explains the law - basically no more than a 30% tint (70% of light getting through) is allowed. I think it's an extra £90ish for sctints to measure the amount of light passing through the front windows and match with an appropriate film to get as near to 35% as poss. The guy i dealt with (bloke from the video, I presume he's the owner) showed me his (mk4) golf that had light tints on the back and a 'clear' film on the front - which still tints by about 7%, in addition to the standard tint.

Basically, I'd ask them what they can do. They gave me a discount card for the fronts to be done, so all is not lost if you don't get it done tomorrow.

Hope it goes well tomorrow - and congrats on your new baby!

Cheers. It cost me £178.60 (including online quote discount) from www.sctints.co.uk (http://www.sctints.co.uk), who are based in Southampton. Their site is a really good source of info, and has lots of videos to explain legalities, how they do it etc.

ok just come back with the car after having tints done.
Had the same level tint as mafri's but also had fronts done with a New "carbon" tint. which has a lifetime garantee that doesnt get damaged by Uv sunlight even after years of abuse. It gives the front a more mirror'd look and totally blocks out heat from the sun, and help preserve the leather upholstery that much more. i cant lower windows for 3 days in the drying period but 1st impressions are excellent. heres some quick pics

at the workshop ready for the makeover

And the finish article... before

after.....

It has so many different looks depending on the ammount of light that hits them. The rear screen shows moisture on the edges still but will be gone a couple of days.
Total bill including free sit and watch it being done was £263, which i thought was excellent vfm

I have seen some cars where the line around the rear screen is really pronounced (very light) but yours looks good.

Looks really good, glad you are pleased. The moisture marks definitely go, I was worried about mine for a while!

Any chance of some more pics of those fronts? It's difficult to judge the mirrored effect from the pics, does the window look any darker?

mafri,
yes i will get some close up pics for you as soon as the rain clears, and get them done over the weekend. I think they are a very good way of a gradual look in colour change from front to back if you know what i mean, rather then a black to clear.I would say what it does is make the fronts look from the outside everyso slightly cloudy and mirrored looking, but still clear visability,so its harder for peeps to see who's driving from the outside. My GTi had blue tinted windows , and they still show the slight blue tinge. Also what i did notice its only 1 outside layer thats fitted to the front, rather then the rears which are a tinted layer each side of the glass! which i never realised they do that.I think its worth if mafri, as you will get yours at a discounted rate as youve had the rears done by them.Bear in mind that its a september 20% discount whether they will honour it nxt month??.
If you have leather interia in yours mafri, i think its worth the extra few quid because it has Uv light defence too, protecting your lovelly soft leather from the suns harmful rays, keeps SHMBO happy and littlens cooler in the hotter months(if we have any that is!)

Title: Re: Aftermarket tints
Post by: Phil mcavity on 28 September 2007, 22:17
I was going to, but decided not to illyan, was abit worried as to what the paint would do after a couple of years or so, ie paint flake/fade.
And also because i have mudflaps fitted, i doubt it would look very good, black flaps to blue side skirts , i prefer to keep the mudflaps so idea was dropped.
