Title: Brake upgrades on a Mk3 16v
Post by: tallpaulr on 25 September 2007, 10:53
What's the cheapest mods you can do the upgrade the brakes, I know changing the discs to drilled will improve it and so will chucking some fast road pads but whats a good combination for cheapness and effectiveness?
The other thing was someone mentioned about putting braided hoses on and was just wondering if it was worth the effort?

standard brakes are good on the gti... altough if you fit braided hoses your pedal will be firmer and will resist fade slightly more... these work with standard or uprated discs too... for uprated discs drilled and grooved are the way to go and my personnal fav's are ebc discs and mintex pads....

Zimmerman cross drilled discs from gsf are wicked quality and well cheap compared to some of the other stuff out there, I have not got to try mine out in anger yet but thereveiw forum on gsf says all good, I did zimermann front x/d front discs, brembo solid rears, Though in reflection for the price i should have bought the zimmerman x/d rears as well With ebc green stuff pads all round with new wheel bearings and braided hoses 240 quid!!!! Bargain!!!!! I think your 16 v came with vr6 sized discs on any way? Other wise tim stilrs racing do some nice set ups!

I had brembo 288mm solid vented discs with Pagid Fast Road pads on my mk3 16v and there was more than enough stopping power.

Cost me about £120 in parts, fitted myself.

Job Done

^^^^ as above

288mm with the braided hoses & a set of good quality pads is all thats required. no need for drilled or grooved disks, plus u have ABS so can just tramp on the brakes as hard as you like!!
