Another problem...my engine warning light came on the other day and stayed on. its not the EPC or whatever, its the one shaped like an engine, that the book describes as being an emissions warning light.
it had an MOT other week. the Temeperature gauge reasy 90deg, but decides to go to zero degrees when it pleases...although this happened before the engine light came on. getting on VAGCOM in next week or so. anyone shed any light as to common things? also, i replced the DV the other week, but again, the engine light came on way after replacing this. no obvious leaks. Engine seems to run ok. ever so slghtly lumpy at idle, but nothing untoward as such...acceleration can seem a little inconcistent in that if you just tickle the throttle it seems to want to go...boot it and doesn't feel as good by far. when you tickle it or boot it right after starting, seems to be great, then warms up and doesnt pull as much as i expect. pulls well in 5th from 70, so may just be illusion, however may be linked?
ANY help aprreciated. its a 2000 (X reg) 1.8 turbo by the way

i know this sounds crazy but you checked ur brake lights? its a common fault that the switch goes under the pedal and that brings on the engine fault light.

Emission warning lamp is actually the engine management light. I know in the book that's what it called, no idea why.
Basically means something wrong, a sensor has gone, coil packs have gone etc - Its a very general light, could be anything.
Best idea is to take to someone with VAGCOM and get to plugged in and the error code read out and then the problem can be sorted.
FYI the light wont go off until its reset via VAGCOM.

I would be tempted to say its your temp sensor, it would give you exactly the symptoms your describe (as would a dodgy MAF or O2 sensor btw) and as your gauge is floating about it does suggest you need a new one anyway. Prety easy and cheap to do yourself, there are a few how to's going about if you google it. Very common fault with all VW's.....
The ECU will tolerate a certain amount of 'nonsense' from the various sensors, which can affect performance, without necessarily tripping the check engine light. Its only when they really misbehave that the light comes on and the ECU then basically ignores the sensor and tries to make do without it.

thanks for that guys. no stranger to stripping engines, so no probs with that; got a 1.8 VVC rover engine (from my BRM) in bits at the moment...rather complicated timing.lol
anyway...i thought there are 2 temp sensors; one for the ECU and one for the dial? or is mine a combined one? ill find out on the VAG, but anyone know whether this is right for my particular model? (that's the case for my VVC, not sure about the v dub bock?)

my engine management light came on 2 days ago!!get a error read out on your car this will tell you what the fault is & how many!!!it plugs into your dash' anyway i did this with mine and it came back with the results that my fuel was to rich on cylinder 1 so it reset the error codes and turned off my light on the dash it has stayed off since it' costs about £20

You just ignored the face that your car was telling you that your fuel was running too rich? lol

Mine came on about 6 months ago so I took my PC down into the car (don't have a laptop!)
Came up as
1 Fault Found:
16556 - Fuel Trim: System Too Rich: Bank 1
P0172 - 35-00 - -
I reset it and it's not come back on since. Not really sure if that is a similar error code to yours but I haven't had any trouble with it since, so hopefully my engine isn't dying from the inside or something :P

Had the same probs many times, the engine light would light up and read the same message. I toke the MAF sensor off and got a new one frow VW about £65 and hey presto.................................... :wink:

That is a nackerd sensor. IIRC its £25 odd quid from vw. They have 4 pins. one for the dash and one for the ECU.
remember to buy a new 'O' ring while your there
You dont seem daft but dont change the sensor while the engine temp is hot :embarassed:

hey im having this same problem with my mk4 at the moment!
Just had it serviced.... however looking and listening to the engine ... the car seems as normal as can be!
Can i still drive it?

Funny thing was I decided to do this at about 9pm so it was just starting to get dark too ! I realised my wireless internet worked outside too and I was fumbling about talking to someone trying to help me getting vagcom to work. I always get sudden urges to do things at strange times.
I had the warning light on loads when I first bought the car. One time it was just a split air intake hose, another time some hose had come off the secondary air system, the other I ended up needing a new cat. The last time was my previous problem. Had quite a few issues when I first bought it but it's been fine for months now. The 'cash' light can mean almost anything but what is for sure is it's going to cost you money!

Do yourself a favor and get a diagnostic reader off ebay £50 (Genden, VAG-COM) and I tell ya, it saved me s*** loads of money in diagnostic charges where VW charge £91 a hour and I was charged 3 hours. Don't say I didn't warn ya :wink:

Hi'as i said before i turned off my engine management light!but it came back on 2 days later so i did a full diagnostic check and it came back again saying 'fuel bank to rich on cylinder 1 & a code.looked code up on pc & said check battery terminals'check fuel lines & fuel filter'i did a service on the car & changed the fuel filter.5 days have passed & engine management light has NOT come back to haunt me!!!!!touch wood this has cured the problem :rolleyes:

Your not wrong dave its back' came back on today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ive only had the car for 2 weeks do u know what i need to do?if its a sensor were is it & also my temp gauge has stopped working now,Its a mk4 on a W'reg 20lt 115bhp. Thought it would be reliable as its only done 52000 miles

Well from reading your last post it doesnt sound like you actually did anything other than reset it which isnt going to do you any good, I know this sounds really simple, but if this light is coming on something has gone and needs correcting, resetting it wont fix it as it will just come back.
You said something about your fuel being too rich? Can you get a hold of the exact error code that came out? fuel running rich could be a number of things, of which the most common I would say is your lamanda (O2) sensor. I have no idea where this is or how to get to it, but without the full error code we can only speculate.

If your temp sensor has stopped working, your ecu will think the engine is cold and will run rich (as is normal for a cold start). Try this first as its cheap and easy to fix.

My engine light came on for the first time in ages today reading "BANK1 system measure fuel too rich" (Vag Com 16556). I've had both the lambda sensors replaced and the MAF sensor a while back and since then the lights come on twice reading the same error. Most unreliable car I've every owned. All my other cars I've ever owned were Vauxhalls and never cost me this much stress.
Sounds like this system too rich problem is all too common throughout this thread.

My too rich problem was a simple lambda sensor replacement. Been good as gold ever since. Sounds like you have just been a little unlucky.

Unlucky aint the word, Sounds like I bought a whole load of trouble.
Seriously thinking of trading it in now for something small and cheaper to run. It's been the garage more than its been on the road LOL.
