Title: The latest Problem with my golf
Post by: marcogolfo on 02 March 2004, 22:24
Hi I thought i'd let you all know the latest problem i'm having and see if anyone can shed some light on it.  I have just had my water pump and thermostat housing replaced at the garage because it was leaking.  I'm driving along and it all seems to work pretty fine, however, after 60 miles theres a funny sort of fishy smell which later dissapears, after a further ten miles the heat from the heater seems to start cooling down and the coolant guage on the dashboard goes down to its start position and stops working.  The oil temperature which normally operates around about 80 degrees will not increase past 60 degrees.  After a further 50 miles, the car gets slightly hotter for five minutes and the coolant temperature indicator moves very slightly and then it all goes to crap again.  I was just wondering if anyone could please, please, please explain this.  Once again your help is more than appreciated
thx
ps the car does blow lukewarm air out on its hottest setting but it is nowhere near as hot as it blew out before
regards
Marc

Have you check your heater matrix - sounds like that's not right ...

Just wondering if they ran the car until the thermostat opened after changing the pump and thermostat. Could simply be a case that the coolant needs topping up. If its not that, then maybe an airlock, in which case try loosening one of the heater hoses jubilee clips at the highest point and see if coolant or air escapes.......careful not to burn yourself.

thx rich i'll try loosening the top hose and try and get rid of some air, should i do this with the engine running?  Also is it possible that if the thermostat was never put back in when the pump and housing was changed these effects would occur??
