As above any recommendations for upgrade - would prefer custom fit or minimal wiring
thanks in advance

I take it you're not intending to amp them - if so look for something with high sensitivity - some of the lower end alpines work well from headunit power if I remember rightly.
-
not intending to amp them using head unit only
-
depends on your hu..just remember hu that say 50wx4 really means 25wx4.... 50w is max rating, just not stated clearly anywhere!

Becker are right up there as far as sound quality are concerned - one of the best.
I'm a little ignorant as far as mk3s are concerned, but if they have seperate tweeter, obviously it's worth going for some components, If not go the co-ax route as recommended above.
Shame you don't want to amp - would make a world of difference. Becker + good quality amp + quality speakers = amazing music!

tried amp and sub before and the bluetooth did not work, didn't get volume from the person phoning me otherwise would have transferred over from my previous car

Infinity Kappa's all round
I got 6.5" comps up front and a pair of 6"s in the parcel tray.
Not into subs much, i want my bootspace and my hearing in 20 years

Phoenix Gold Octane R in my mk3 sounds fantastic

Infinity Kappas usually = 2 ohms impedance, which usually = headunit death.

Had this setup for 6 years now in two mk3s, Headunit is a 10 year old Blaupunkt 'paris' 4x40w.
Does the job well and it can put newer non-sub systems to shame.
Some other speakers i would recommend are Cerwin Vega's
