Title: Damage to Golf
Post by: Malky on 02 March 2004, 10:19
My uncle crashed my Golf last night (5 minutes after handing me a cheque for ?1000 for its purchase)

He has damaged the front o/s of the car.  From what I can see it needs a new wing/headlight/grille/bumper/indicator unit and bonnet.

What I am hoping is one of you can tell me what possible damage is unseen to the eye.  ie What structural parts are behind the front wing/headlight/Bumper?

there are the chassis/engine rails/legs, suspension towers for starters if either of theses are broken/bent etc then a garage will nedd to look at it. other bits include the front crossmember slam panel thing but this is easily replacable. you best bet is to strip everything off take a good look and see exactly what is goin on. it isnt hard to get the wings/bumpers/crossmember/etc off just bolts to undo and loads of sealant to cut away but you are lucky cos none of the panels should be welded on. hope it isnt serious!

do you know how fast he crashed it cos i did the same thing but on a dual carriageway at about 60-65mph and nothing was bent except the panels and the side of the engine bay.(that was a b!tch to straighten out) ;D

mate vw's are hardcore you can fix it ;D

It was only about a 20mph crash.  The amusing thing (not for him) was that he hit my aunt who was driving ahead of him (she'd drove him to my house to pick up the car)

So her Primera is a bit of a mess, but they were scrapping that anyway and replacing it with my Golf.  I dont think there will be any suspension or chassis damage.

What I was unsure about was what was behind the bumper and headlights that could be bent or twisted.  The landing panel is slightly bent but can be straightened.

Reminds me when my mate brake'd sharp infront of me :'(

Hit him at about 40-50 (no chasis damage to mine) *touch wood*
I hit him that hard that his back seat cracked. My passenger mate didnt have his seat belt on and didnt feel a thing as my car took the impact just as it should have done.

took lees than a week to fix as these are all bolt on parts. So that was kind of a bonus :-\

Strip it down and have a good look mate. You should see any major damage. An -day old rs focus drove into the back of me in the snow at about twenty miles an hour. Didn't do any major camage. Just needed new bumper and brackets + small dent in rear quarter Claimed on his insurance though. T-Totalled the front end of his RS. All made out of carbon fibre. Just crumpled around me golf >:(

talking about uno's

if you look at my crash pic. Yep i hit an uno

totaly scooped his back end up on my bonnet and threw it across the road.

to be honest his car had not much damage because i hit his spare wheel recess bit.
