Title: can't believe auto express.....
Post by: vanders on 20 September 2007, 13:28
You have probably seen .......... they rate the new Mini Cooper Clubman a better car than a GTI.

Nothing against the Cooper - but in Clubman guise it's so f.......... ugly. They make Mini's performance better, presumably based on their silly comparison of 50-70 mph in 5th & 6th 'cos it's slower in the other in gear comparisons.

Anyway each to their own and I wont be swapping.

The new 'club' door on that Clubman is a bit weird, and on the wrong side of the car for the UK.

Proper dire looking machine that Mini Cooper S Club'foot', plus if it was specced up to decent levels, it ceases to be a sensible price!

We're bound to be biased but I've owned the Cooper S and GTI and to be honest, talented though those Mini's are they are nothing like as pleasureable to own long term.

Or anything like as quick!

I had a cooper and it was a brilliant little go-kart of a car, but pogoed from bump to bump so not great for regular long distance, which my GTi is especialy with the immense DSG, im getting stung pretty bad for insurance renewal quotes though, 25, had a minor bump on a roundabout back in july.....

The mini is a marmite car, you either love it or hate it - I fall in to the later.  The Golf Gti is a good looking car and the mini doesn't know what it wants to be 1960's or 21 century?  Since the car will probably spend 90 % of it's time parked on the drive not moving how it looks is as important or more so than how it drives! :nerd:

well I have just got a new GTI, the last car was a R53 mini cooper s works (210bhp 05car) , and while that car was fun and had a real sense of occasion, in comparison to the golf though it was harsh, noisy and had to be rev'd hard to extract the performance. Rattles, build quality etc was dreaduful. Fuel consumption was awful too! I liked the looks but the new cooper s's and the clubman are really rather puffer fish like from the front, there are still build issues, the turbo engine is fast, and better on economy, but torque steer is now an issue and even then the clubman is not a practical car like the golf!

comparing a mini clubman with a GTI is not like for like, and I would not consider the 2 in the same light if I was buying a car!

minis are good cars, but I have had my fix and the Gti is a great car to trade up too.
