Title: possibilty of being lynched
Post by: kraM on 18 September 2007, 12:13
Hi

I am going to ask a question that will probably upset the pure VW fans.
I have been toying with all sorts of ideas for an engine swap for my beloved MK1.
I have been offered a 1.8 16v for my 1.9 TSR lump, straight swap.  Both need re-building/tuning.
Or (and a little research tells me it is a fairly easy swap) a Honda civic lump and box.  I can find a 1.8 vtec Civic for about a grand, I could nick the engine, box, cooling system, e.c.u.'s and wiring and sell off all the other bits.  It would make 167bhp everyday of the week, the transmission is designed to cope (also comes with an LSD:) ) The injection system is advance, i.e. good fuel ecomony and poke, it's all aluminum, so may not weigh much more, only problem being de-cating the car (no lamba snsors could give the ecu the hump) and speedo pickup?
Whadayathink?

Please don't hurt me...

Cheers

kraM

I dont reccon you'd get lynched....quite the opposite if you document the swap.

Afterall, the original can be put back and I think people get upset more if you change the look rather than the mechanicals.....maybe I'll get lynched for say all that ;)

What 1.8 is it? I assume the B18C4 from an MB6 Civic?

Could be interesting...

If your going to do it might as well go for the 2.2 Vtec out of an Accord :)

I have thought about all the Honda lumps (I did my apprenticeship at Honda)
The 1.8 Civic VTi lump has been decided,
1) You can buy a whole car for about a grand, swap what you need and flog the rest,
2) The mounts are in similar places, the 2.2l lumps have a very different mount, plus extra money I don't have
3) The Intergra R lump is prefered, but due to it costing a shed load and it actually being a relly nice motor to drive, I have to leave it in the shell and loose my licence that way.
4) The Civic 5 dr never should have had that lump fitted, it is too buzzy for a family hatch.  :nerd:

Right, time to find a grand, and some free time...

Anyone interested in a tuned 1.6 with everything you need to run it?

For the same money as the B18 car you are looking to buy, you could get a B20 CR-V bottom end and a B16 a1/a2 head and have a fast and torquey 2.0l B20 VTec which would destroy and power out put by a standard B18C6 (typre R) fopr a fraction of the cost.

Go figure...

Hi,

I didn't think that Honda would make compatable engine componants.  It sounds like a good idea, but I am on a serious budget, and need to buy one complete car, so I can swap every thing I need over, if I could afford two cars, then I think that I would give it ago.

...sudden thought, the CRV comes with non-permanant 4 wheel drive, kind-a haldax stylee.... mmm food for thought.

Well once you have that donor car, your are nearly there B20's can be had from £350 is + The conversion kit £120. So it's not a massive amount bearing in mind what you get.

Here is Mark Eleys, is not your 'out of the box' B20 but you should get the idea...

I hate cars.  I ripped my TSR 1.9 out at the weekend (a mate wants it for is cab) flung my 1.6 back together, turned over ok...ish on the engine stand, chucked it into the car, was really pround of the job, very tidy for a tempory engine, keyed it over, just as she caught, the ba*tard locked.  Gotta rip the sump off tomorrow night after work to see what the damage is, hopefully nowt, hopefully a school boy error, else I will be loosing my cool and flinging my toys outa the pram big stylee     , I am going down to the west country this weekend and really don't wanna take my J reg Kia Pride (1.3 LX model :smug: :smug:)

Just thought I'd share my problem, I hate cars, you spen phuqing hours re-building something, trying to get it right and you make a tiny error and the bast*rd doesn't wanna play?

yours crying with near anger

Pulled the bottom end off, found that some muppet (me) had put the #2 big end cap on the wrong way around.
Spent about 4 hours with a tiny file and stone cleaning her up.
Put it back together, coolant flange on the front of the head develops a leak, turns out to have a hair line crack in it.  PHUQING cars.
Get it sorted (posh metal glue)
Drive to the shops, leave lights on, smile at nice lady who gives me a jump start, drive to petrol station, bastard starts, alternator not charging, turn her off, check connections, ok, start again, but it won't, have to push start accross Sainsburys petrol forecourt on my own (hairy) some old guy honks at me and tells me to get out of the way, I suggest in the polite calm mood that I am now in that he complys with a famous Anglo Saxon saying involving sex and travel.
Get it running, decide that I will go to Cornwall (after all the boot is fully loaded), new piston rings, so nice and gently up to the rev limiter in first second and third getting on to the motorway.  Alternator stops charging at Bristol when I re-fuel, get another Jump start.  Bloke says 'how good it is to see these old cars still running'... if only he knew!!!
Half way down the A30, running on side lights, no heater or radio the alternator packs up, not enough power to power the gauges (first thought, 'it must be bloody cold, temp gauge is dropping, woah it's using loadsa fuel) followed by missing (electric fuel pump).  It is now dark, a lorry indicates to pull out of a lay-by, I flash him out (forggeting the lack of power) the bastard shuts down, immobliser cuts in, alarm goes off and I gently roll past said lorry with no lights, hazards flashing and siren slowly dieing.
Then a loud bang, she fires back into life with a whooping 10volts on the display, and I drove all the way there on sidelights only and no other problems.

My mate down there very kindly lent me the alternator from a loan car, fitted it and hey presto, 14 volts, test drive seemed a little limited, by the rev limiter, so we removed it, now does a true 60 in second and has given it another 8 mph on the top end.  Un-kind I know, but I was beyond caring by then.

Journey home was great.  (nothing stoped working/fell off)

Gotta love the MK1
