Hey!!

I know how you feel, I had this problem for a very long time on my MK2 golf and nowone was able to help me. Replace both ball joints whiles you are at it and I promise it will go away you can say F*** Off to the hole knock, knock, knocking crap.

They shouldn't be more than ?20 to ?30 at the most and don't take long to replace.

Don't t do like me spent loads of money replaced complete driveshaft, engine mounts and it was all down to a F***** ball joint.

Good Luck
Hope it helps
Jose

Yep I agree with power, bottom ball joints can sound horrendous when gone. One way to try and confirm it's the ball joint is to find one of those nasty sunken manhole covers out on the road (let's face it there are plenty) if it knocks when you drive over one of those the ball joint is a likely cause. You can then drive over it with the other wheel to see if the other side knocks. If you really wanna confirm it jack-up the suspect corner and give the bottom of the wheel a good yank in and out (no innuendo's please) if the ball joint has gone you will be able to feel the play in it.
Driveshafts only normally clonk/knock when under load so you would have to have to power on going round a corner or be pulling away. By the time a C.V. joint was far enough gone to be clonking without load you'd definately know about it coz it would be trying to rip the steering out of your hands.
