Guys
It seems you all are very knowledgeable so I'm asking for your help.
Should I buy a 6 month old R32? I'm weighing up the pro's and con's of driving experience against cost and running costs.
Convince me, I'm confused....
Cheers

BUY IT
Then give it 2 me

pmsl....im pretty sure every one else here would convince you to buy an ED30....i think i would aswell if i had the choice

Depends on the price that you pay as to whether to get an R32 or not.
This thread could run and run and may well just end up confusing the situation rather than cementing it :undecided:
Personally I would choose a GTI (standard or ED30) over an R32. Just ask Illyun. he's had both and still ended up back with an ED30.
R32 drinks more and the tax is double that of a GTI, but if you can afford it and you aren't tempted by the GTI then the R32 is a great car.

I ended up with the Ed30 because my head prevailed over my heart. The Ed30 is a long term purchase for me and I reckon will hold its value better over the long term than the R32. Also with fuel prices being what they are, I found the R32 taking over £200 in petrol against around £150 for the GTI... the R32 engine makes you want to put your foot down just to hear the V6 sound which is amazing. Finally, the Ed30 GTI is lighter and more nimble than the R32 and more of a fun car.
If money wasn't an issue and the Ed30 wasn't an anniversary model, I'd get the R32. Its the best car I have ever had - maybe I'm a bit misty eyed because I had the drive of my life in it from Ipswich to Gibraltar. But it is a serious and mature car comapred to the Ed30 and I bought the R32 after owning a standard M5 GTI... and I much preferred the R32 over the standard GTI. Part of that was to do with the fact that the R32 had DSG and my standard GTI was manual. I didn't like my manual Ed30 when I part-exd my R32 for it either. The current DSG Ed30 I have is brilliant - but I still miss the R32 badly and reckon on balance, its a better car than the Ed30, but only just and not by a large a margin as to justify the higher running costs.
-
Id have the rear end look of an R32 anyday, but prefer the looks, running costs/performance of the GTi. Both are cars to be seen in, and enjoy the ammount of envious looks you'll get!

Guys
Thanks for your responses. I did drive the ED30 today and it feels totally different, although looks wise inside it's exactly the same and aside from the exhausts the alloys are the only thing that seperate it.
But putting your foot down gives you a different feeling altogether.
My main problem is not to buy R32 or GTI, it's to buy R32 or not at all. It's without doubt an exciting car but my question is, is it worth the money.
It drives beautifully though and I can only imagine what would happen if I really pushed it on the test drive.
One other question, new alloys or old alloys. I think the old ones are Zolder which look a lot better than the new ones.
Once again, thanks for all your help, I am totally confused whether to throw caution to the wind or be sensible.....
-
Prefer the new style alloys to the Zolders. Easier to clean too.
-
Starting to see quite a few sets of Zolders on Golf Diesels these days

Sheeeeeeeeat
Been reading all the posts on this forum.
Looks like GAP insurance is a must. Is this available as part of the insurance or only from VW?

Caution to the wind......you only live once

You should be able to get gap insurance from most insurers, but don't pay more than £300 for 3 yrs cover and if possible get the dealer to throw it in for free as a deal softener.

I'd love to throw caution to the wind but I'm constantly talking myself out of it........
VED for one, fackin £400.........fear of having it stolen...........MPG
I'll let you know what I decide and I'll put photos on
The one I am thinking is Black 5 dr DSG with Leather seats and Sat Nav

I used to think like that. The one thing that puts life into perspective is when you lose someone near to you. I realised that where we are is a one shot deal and the decisions we make form our lives, who we are and affect those who we love around us. Don't procrastinate about how external issues may affect your decision. The decision for something like this is a simple one:- if you like it, want it, can afford it and it doesn't adversely affect those who you love....GET IT!
Oooooh...that was abnormally philosophical from me there
-
That's right, thanks.
Now just got to sort the finance. VW have offered me something that is a bit "mafia".....
Then I tried to apply a loan at bank and they're going on about credit checks etc, makes me die.......
Anyway, I'll sign off for now and come back when I've bought it........

Black is nice but Deep Pearl Blue is    and the classic R32 colour

OMG I think I'll have to get a cheap 2/3/4th hand Mk5 R32 is a couple of years time... I really do miss that car. I wonder how much an earlier one will be worth in 2-3 years time. Here's hoping that the Mk6 GTI/R32/6 is a brilliant car so as to further depress Mk5 R32 values... somehow, I have a feeling that the Mk6 will not be as good thereby keeping Mk5 residuals high... well at least my Ed30 will still be worth something then..
-
it's roughly the same as the one in the photo you have with vaguely tinted back windows
my choice would be shadow blue and not dbp but i'm not buying it new :undecided:
got to make a decision by monday
my problem as well is i might only keep it for say a year or two years
what levels of depreciation could i expect? it's got quite a lot of options......

My local dealer told me that options don't make much difference when it comes to resale. Thats BS as I have found from selling two loaded Mk5s and one basic spec Mk5 GTI... maybe 10 years down the line it doesn't matter that much but even then you'd sell it much faster.
-
cheers
but is there a set amount approx per year it would drop
say £3-4k?
-
DannyBoy!! Lease the r32 like me.. brand spanking new. No tax to pay and you know exactly what the car loses over 2yrs. At the end of the lease I just give it back. And in the meantime i get to drive it like i stole it
only limitation is if you do more than 10k year
-
who do you lease it from?
i've got contacts in the industry already, maybe you're right..............
man i'm so confused.........i just can't stop thinking about it, it's driving me carayzeeeeeeeeeee :lipsrsealed:

Yebut - if you did the same or similar epic road trips in your Ed30, I'm quite sure your opinion would change. The Ed30 would do an identical job as your R32, plus you'd have a bigger boot to get even more duty-free (or Pampers for the little one!).
I've had the fortune of doing many long road trips, in a variety of different cars, and I could hand on heart state that if I were offered the keys to either a 32 or a GTI, and told to drive around Europe for a month, and that I would have to pay for my own fuel, it would be a no-brainer.

If that is your fear, then an R32 is not for you
.....fear of having it stolen.......
Tracker Horizon or Tracker Response. With both, you WILL get it back.

You have a point TT.... The pampers didn't fit in the boot so they had to go on the back seats....

If you have a genuine "Tracker", and not some cheapskate Pikey imposter tracking device, then you usually get it back without any damage at all.
It is the "lesser" varieties of tracking devices which rely on just one tracking technology, and also don't have any official Police support - they are the ones where you car is part returned in oily cardboard boxes.

DannyBoy look at it this way. I the price i was quoted for the standard 5dr R32 was £295 pm. Thats a cracking deal by anyones standards.. I added a few extras like ipod, armrest, and winter pack (be careful because this is where the costs start to rise). Anyway the total I pay is 315pm + vat which is ideal if your self employed. im you would like more details of whom i used feel free to PM me. But i dont regret it one bit. Its turned into more of a try before you buy.. and the best bit is that its hassel free motoring for the period you have it!
-
I've only gone and bought it
Whoopppppppppppeeeeeee, can't wait. Picking it up Saurday hopefully all things being equal. Got to get shot of my Polo first  From 65 BHP to 250 BHP in the blink of an eye!!!!
R32, I did try contract but the car is fully spec'd and was coming in about £500 plus the wait for it. I've got a lot of contacts through work on that front but as you say the spec adds a fortune as it's not discounted by the RV like the car, you more or less pay for it.....
Anyway, the purchase of a new car has been consuming me for about 5 years now and finally I've done it so I can't wait and to hell with the money. I'll sell my house if I have to!!!
Thanks for all your help everyone. I haven't even introduced myself and you've all been really helpful it helping me make a decision, so thanks for that, although it's always easier spending other people's money..... :lipsrsealed:
The big question is, where do I drive to on the first day  Thinking to go to the countryside somewhere..........any tips?
If you want me to, I'll post some pictures when I get it. I can't believe that there are so many people out there as obsessed as me about cars................... :embarassed:
-
Obsessed, not me  It's simply a way of life.....errr.....maybe I am obsessed :undecided:
-
BTW.... enjoy
-
Excellent!! trust me you wount regret it one bit!!
Its a mean machine.. plenty of nice roads here in Yorkshire especially when heading up towards the dales.. but if you want my advice you dont need nice roads.. just an empty one and a tank full of fuel! I think nightdriving is the key.. and with those lovelly bright xenons.. it will be like day anyway!
What spec have you gone for??
-
Leather, sat nav, rear tinted, DSG, 6 CD's, phone preparation, 5 dr.....Black
It's 2nd hand, 6 months and probably would have gone for something slightly different but can't complain
-
Nice spec
Glad to see it has DSG

I second that!! Its a fab car... I read on here that the best way to enjoy the car is to not look at the mpg on the trip computer. Its true!! Just dont look at it.. drive the way you want to.. and enjoy!
Good spec too.. apart from the dsg :lipsrsealed:
