Title: monza 18"
Post by: joesgti on 14 September 2007, 13:46
hi anybody know where to get some monza alloys cheap, my car came with the 17"   and they look cr*p compared to the 18"s, ive looked about but only ones i can find are replicas,  :undecided:whats the crack with these, any good or not,

also what are kumo tyers like, because they are on my car now, i thought they would have come with bridgeston but nope!!

feedback would be gooooood

Ebay or if you got deep pockets, the stealers lol

Kumo aren't brillantly but can't comment fully as i've not used them personally.  Flavour of the month on here is the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's; pricey but worth the money apparently

I had a set of Khumo's on my TDI and they were fine...........in the dry. In the wet they had about as much grip as a tin lid on wet ice

Mine came with the 17" wheels and I've just replaced them with some 18" replicas with the Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres.

I think the wheels look fine, difficult to tell they're not OEM. I would like the OEMs if I had the choice but not at the price the dealers want.

I have a theory that if the OEM wheels start to corrode, as they do, then I can just replace all of mine if they were to corrode for the price of one and a half OEM wheels....

...Or rubthem down and re-spray them. Bout £30 for a self done re-furb.

How much do the dealers ask for 18"?

In regard to the kumo tyres, I can't comment on a mk5 but I have a set on my mk2.
They're ok tyres for steady day to day driving but if you're giving it some you can really feel them struggling to cope
And in heavy rain, on the motorway especially, they aqua plane pretty bad and don't offer much in the way of confidence.

At the end of the day, the ones I have at least, aren't really performance tyres, and personally I would replace them
Heard good things about goodyear eagle f1's but a lot of people on here rate michelins too

The £400 upgrade for 18" Monzas when buying a new GTI is the best £400 you could ever spend.  I just can't understand why anyone buys a new GTI without 18" Monzas.  The car just doesn't look the same on the standard wheels.

Here, here. They are the dogs.

Ed30's may have the traditional (dated ) spoked wheels but Monza's are total class :smug:

With 17"s maybe, but not with the polished face on the 18"s.

Rather have the Pescara's myself, Monza II's have too many refurb issues and don't look as sporty as the Pescara's IMO :smug:

The last two Anni editions also had spoked wheels too.......... The mkII (campaign models??? someone set me right .....Helio blue, Oak green etc) had spoked alloys as well.

If they are replicas they probably wont be polished.

Agreed - part of the heritage from the MK I era with the red grille surround, checked cloth seats and golf ball gear lever. Just prefer the more modern looking Monza's myself

Mine, and almost all 18" Monza reps are polished.

monza II's any day of the week for me, ed30's are nice but cannot match the style and drive by look of them.scuffing any alloy is a real bummer in any form so shouldnt be considered a negative when choosing.Shame the ed30 doesnt come as an option with them.

Do NOT get Goodyear F1s - there are better tyres (particularly when it rains), and with a bit of haggling, a similar price too.

Oh, and NEVER buy second-hand tyres, because you do not know their "history".

well what tyers do you reckon? bridgestone? also does anybody know how much the Pescaras are? might just wait till christmas and get the misses to get me them

also on the standard gti, are the skirts, splitter and rear bumper able to be sprayed?

might just make myself a ED30

I would go with Michelins or Continentals. Agree that F1's are pants in the wet and to me don't have the same dry grip either, always makes me wonder how they win these tests.

Anyway, Mich. PS2's are very good tyres. Have ContiSports Contact2's on my 911 at the moment and they are good but think the ride quality is better on the Michelins, also seem to last longer. Not cheap tho.

Rear bumper and front splitter are different on the ED30 to the std GTI. It is much easier to buy R32 side skirts and have them painted than try to paint the std GTI ones due to the slight patternation on the GTI skirts. :nerd:

i thought they were the same??? they look the same, the skirts do anyways, just got a slight texture on, would probs need to be seriously primered and smoothed. what are the r32 skirts like?

Not Bridgestone either (bad reports on this forum).

I agree with Lagerlout, Michelins being the absolute best, and the Continental also very good, although the Contis are not quite as comfortable, particularly at low speeds, when compared to Michelin.

The standard GTI skirts etc can be sprayed.  But you MUST use a decent bodyshop, and they MUST use the specialist flexible primer.

Of the side skirts, the GTI, Ed30 and R32 all have an identical profile (shape), but the Ed30 and R32 have a smooth finish (and are supplied in grey primer) specifically for painting, whereas the standard GTI have a "grainy" textured finish (but can still be painted with the appropriate preparation).

The front an rear bumpers are different between all three, but again, the standard GTI bumpers can be professionally painted.
