Title: After market audio in a mk5
Post by: Ozz on 14 September 2007, 12:16
Ok forgive me as I don't know all that much about new golfs, but I wanted to know how easy it is to put an aftermarket head unit into a mk5, and what options there are, as I'm trying to get my parents into a mk5 but they're a bit fussy when it comes to picking the right car, and if I can take the audio issues out of the picture it will be a lot easier!!

Cheers for any help!

no need to replace it, it sounds amazing as standard and i know as i used to do alot of work on car audio. if you want to replace the head unit  then just get a facia from ebay for the mk5, then unscrew the original unit, if you dont know what ur doin then take it to a car audio shop, you may end up scratching the dashboadrd.

Looking around a bit, if you need bluetooth phone and proper IPOD track display you need to go aftermarket for the head unit. There are double-din units available from Kenwood including Nav for about £750, or some awesome AVIC kit from Pioneer for double that. Nav on that unit looks stunning. IF I get an Ed30 I'll get one with the bog standard unit and fit one of the above. Don't see the point of an "almost there" factory install.

Basically I've sold the idea of a mk5 to them, been to look at a few, but my mum likes to listen to stories in the car, which either means a tape player (which I haven't seen in any mk5!) or an mp3 cd player, which I believe is an option on the mk5, but doesn't seem all that common. Is it possible to get hold of an vw mp3 cd player for the car and fit it? Just to keep it looking factory. I'm fairly handy with car electrics and can't see it being that hard to do.

That'd mean teaching my mum how to work and mp3 player, not a prospect I relish!!

If your mum would struggle with an MP3 player, then I'd stick with the standard head unit :undecided:. If she is getting a brand new '08 model then they come with an MP3 CD compatible player.
