I own a new Edition 30 GTI and although I've heard that the GTI engine can emit some pretty crude noises I'm a little suprised at the 'Diesely chunter' on start up.
It sounds like a 300,000 mile old Peugeot minicab for the first couple of seconds, is that normal????
And should it be tappety thereafter????
It's fine from inside but standing at the front of the car it sounds like it needs oil and lots of it!
Anyone know anything????

it does start with a sound of diesel. I rather like that sound.
I hear no tappety... have you checked the oil level?

Oil level fine, needs maybe 300ml.
Car sounds awful, kind of big end bearing sound as soon as the ignition key is released on start up.
Other GTI's I've driven have not sounded this bad.

I would get it checked out mate, I have had mine since Apr and it sounds fine, my previous car was a GT TDI so I know what a diesel sounds like, and my ED30 is not even close
-
mine starts up with a chunter and a diesely sound , ive had it in at the stealer for the last few days for somthing else, they didnt mention anything about the sound, it sounds ok once running and warm though!
-
My ed30 did that when i could only put some crap petrol in, as soon as I got it back on tesco 99 it was fine
The start up sound is bad =[

I've had a Diesel MKV and I guarantee you that my ED30 sounds no where near as bad on start up

Is there any change in the valve train on an Ed30 compared to a normal GTI? No change from hydraulic lifters to solid bucket for example?

We seem to be getting back to the question of whether or not the ED30 has upgraded internals again . No-one seems to know for definite :undecided:

I'll leave the "is the Edition 30 a detuned S3 lump" speculation for another thread.
I've heard that a 'chunter' on start up can be a characteristic of the TFSI engine and I'm going to ride it out for now.
When my uninformed friends say "Got a new car eh? Start 'er up and let's hear 'er then" I still cringe!!

10.3:1 compression ratio has probably got some thing to do with it. Then again, the GTI cabin is nicely soundproofed so not really an issue is it

The 2.0T FSI is reknown for certain "characteristic" noises, particularly on start-up.
First, the "diesely" sound - this is due to the direct injection. Whilst a good "ear" can notice conventional (manifold sited) fuel injectors pulsing, the direct injection fuel system works at a considerably higher pressure, and so the injectors are slightly more audible.
Secondly, the "tappety" sound actually comes from the camshaft drive chain. If you look at the very useful "self study guide" of the TFSI engine (as found in my even more useful free workshop manuals thread  ), you should see exactly where the timing chain is, and then be able to determine if the tappety noise is coming from that area.
However, if any noises appear to be excessive, then a trip to the stealer will be advisable, as will a side-by-side comparison with another GTI.

Mine was very noisy, not just at startup but also after a run whne idling... tappety noise was there until about 3000rpm and then it faded... anyway, took it to the dealers and they decided it needed a new engine!! It had done 27k and was under warranty... details in this thread: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=62751.30 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=62751.30)
