Title: what causes the 1.8 gti engine to smoke after warmed up ??

as above, smokes whence warmed up ! 1992 j plate 99k miles..

what colour smoke? blue or white? blue means its burning oil, could be the rings? or white could mean your heads leaking!  :undecided:

mine did that after i overfilled the oil...?!

stopped smoking when oil worked its way down :)

mine smoked when it got hot, I've since fitted a flowed head and it doesnt do it anymore so i assume it was stem seals!

could be either or both, valve stem seals or your piston rings, as the engine wams the bores loosen around the pistons, worn rings will let oil pass up to the combustion area, really makes the performance of your engine lack big style. quickest thing i did when this happened to my old 1600 gti engine was to buy my mates 1800 70k mile engine and g/box out of his old scirocco scala gt and transplant, i found this quicker than taking an engine apart and performing an internal service and less cost! this is only if you have a workshop amount of tools and a jcb to lift the engine out he he :grin: :grin: :grin:
