My girlfriends 1.6 Drivers clutch is on its way out. How easy are they to change?
-
depends on how mechanically skilled you are in a way..read up in the haynes and see if your upto it..

Not bad with mechanics.....but not the best! Changed starters motor, alternator, plugs, oils and stuff like that. Im going for a TT conversion on my MK2......but with a fair few bodies to help!
Bit worried that I will get the clutch off and not be able to get the new one on
Has anyone carried out this operation?

I recently did the clutch in my 16v, although the engine was out so it was easier access. But its not that difficult, the only tool I needed which I didnt have was a torque wrench. Lots of people worry about clutch alignment, but I did it by eye. Basically if the gearbox slides on easily its aligned, if not its not quite right!

its an easy job really, borrow an alignment tool, or use a socket and a bolt to get the rough centre, tighten lightly, then check if box slides on tighten a bit more then refit box, if not adjust and try again, watch for the hidden bolts and the locating dowels as they have a tendency to hold onto the flange! Keep the driveshafts right out the way and its easy, get a driveshaft gasket set so you got new bolts to put on you can be sure of a good fit then, not something that will come around later and bite you on the a*se like mine did by coming off entering a roundabout.!!!! :embarassed: Get a proper splined socket for the bolts worth it in the long run. Good luck!

Am changing mine at the mo, its not too bad a job, have removed the gear box which took a couple of hours just taking time with removing everything-the rear mount needs to be removed rather than just undone.give it a go-once its off-you know it will be easier getting it back on!!
