Title: Possible engine / gearbox mount gone? Mk2 16v
Post by: topbloke77 on 10 September 2007, 19:56
I have a 1989 mk2 16v. After a thrashing at Knockhill a judder/knock  from the engine/box has appeared It appears from a standing start and when accelarating on/off. Im thinking it has to be a engine or gearbox mount. I have checked by trying to move the engine in the  bay by hand, but it feels quite solid. Does anyone know what is the most likely mount to give up? Or any other suggestions as to what this could be?

Cheers

Ian

Normaly it's the front engine mount. Mine was shot and as you say i could hardly move the engine. I did replace all 3 engine mounts when i put my 9a in and much better now.

Start the car up and whilst in 1st (with h/brake on) release the clutch until just after biting point, and if you can see the engine move more than you think it should, or if you hear the tell-tale clunk - it's the front mount.

Get a solid front mount, you wont look back imo.

Oh yes you will!

Mine is coming off when I bet the Milltek manifold with the flexi, as the vibration is f**kcing awfull.

From my experience solid front mounts seem to be a bit hit and miss.

The first one i had in my 8v does shake the sh!t out of the car, like Lewy has said. Going off that i wouldn't recommend them

The one i have now though in a 16v is hardly noticeable, and that honestly isn't an exaggeration!  Going off this one i would recommend one

I think the one in Chris' Jetta is somewhere in the middle of those 2

mine is sweet, a kick when it starts, then no noticable extra vibration at all!

How easy are the rear engine mounts to change?

I know you need to support the engine blaa blaa but are they easy to get at?

As long as you can get above and below the car they are not to bad. Main problem is the lower bolt closest to the drivers front wheel as you have to put a extension bar through the hole in the lower arm and when you cars lowered you cannot get on it but other than that an easy job.

may sound mad but do the check with the handbreak on but also look at the cv joints for movement has been known to be slopy diff worth a look

Done the rear engine mount today.

Bloody-ell its a crap job.

The bolts were easy to undo on mine (thank God) but I had to undo the drivers side inner driveshaft to get the mount out. Longed my life out

Gearbox mount tomorrow. hurrah! Not looking forward to the clearance issues with certain bolts (slick/ rubjonny might know what im on about)
