not sure if you already know but the MK1 leon is the basically a MK4 golf with a body kit.

the only think i know about differences between the leon and golf are that the leon weights more, so slower and less economical, however its cheaper / you might get more options for your money.

one thing i found when i was looking for my car last year was that the leon TDI 150 is a rare car, my golf took searching to find, but there were less leons.

Oh the leons are 5 dr only (can be a problem for some) personally i think both the Golf and Leon 5 dr's look good, where as the A3 doesn't

I'd imagine that the leons suffer the same problems as the golfs which you can find in a sticky.

pro's wise, solidly build, very good performance from a diesel whilst still returning over 50 mpg.

you get a good standard spec from both the 130 and 150, the 150 gives you the 1.8T suspension a front mounted intercooler and bigger turbo, you also get the V6 4 motion front spliter  heres a fooked up think the 130 gets the front arm rest as standard in the 150 its a £110 option

I have heard that the Leons have better handling ? Also I didnt think the was any difference between the GT TDI130 & 150 cosmenticly I just thought it had a FMIC I thought this was the only difference plus the extra 20bhp

also i think the 150 came with the Montreal II wheels as standard.  Ridge is correct on the other things too :afro:

unless seat have tweaked the suspension setup i'd image they would handle the same as its the same chassis, can't really comment on the handly as not driven a leon.

from the outside the 150 sits lower (1.8T suspension) and has the different splitter, other than that they are the same as far as i know, both had monty II's

What is the handling like on the GT TDI150 because I have heard it is not that good.

sadly the MKIV chassis was not the greatest platform for a GTI but with a couple of mods in can be turned into a decent car.

with the TDI the nose is obviously heavier than the petrol equivalent so you will get understeer; fitting a rear anti-roll bar will help reduce that but won't eliminate it completely.

the 150 is slightly heavier than the 130 which like Rhyso says can lean to understeer.  i've not had any problems with the handling on mine, but i don't trash it that often, but when i have i've found the handling ok, obviously its not an elise but as long as you're not stupid you'll be fine.

I wanted the leon 130 but had a hard time finding one in the price bracket. I say go for leon if you can find them.

Yeah, the Leons are wicked, they do handle better as its got a different suspension set up, the 130 TDI SE is a great car for the money, as is the Cupra 150 if youve got a bit more to spend. id buy one over a golf anyday to be fair!

I think I prefer the look of the Cupra 150 but I have heard that the Golf has a lot better build quality in the cab and the golf is a lot better place to be whilst driving.

Also I have been looking at some of the GT TDI's 130 & 150 but they dont have the sports interior I have seen on some of the Gt TDI's which GT TDI's come with the Recaro sports interior, and what other options are available that I should look out for ?

as far as i know the recaro's were standard, however VW changed them to their own recaro equivalent (just as good) and then changed it back

what other options are available that I should look out for ?

main options to look for are climate or sunroof, cruise control, winter pack, xenons and stability (ESP)

most stuff on the MK4 can be fitted after market, although stuff like xenons, ESP, cliamte are going to cost £'s to retro fit, where as cruise control or the front armrest as easy jobs.

options for the 130

Depends if you want them or not lol

Having the extras doesnt make the car run and better / worse which should be the main thing you look for in the car.

yeah depends on your budget and how long you want to spend searching for your ideal car.

best bet is to work out what the must haves are and what the like to haves are

for example IMO ESP and climate are essential, so when i was looking i didn't discount those cars without.

also remember that server of these options can be added after you've got the car.

extras are nice but people will up the price they ask for their car.

just try and find the cleanest, well maintainted example you can find within your budget and enjoy.

the more extras you have the more there is likely to go wrong

if you can find a MKIV with xenons you're doing well as they are rarer than a wooden horses excrement (though Ridge being a jammy sod has them!!)

cruise can be retrofitted for around £70 of parts and a little labour.

climate control is more troublesome than manual aircon; have been several cases of the units failing, and the fans failing resulting in big bills! some were done under warranty but its one thing to look out for

Interesting thread… I'm currently in the market for a 130 or 150 TDi. Was previously undecided on whether it should be a Golf or a Leon. I think the facelift MK1 Leons look really nice (FR 130 etc) but the preface lift ones have been hit with the "we couldn’t be bothered with the styling and just wanted to produce a cheaper alternative to the golf and A3" stick.

So I'm leaning towards a golf as I don't want to spend the money I would need to, to get a facelift Leon. I’m a little undecided as to whether I should pay the extra for a 150 or just settle for a 130 thought to be honest. I think if I end up keeping the car for a while I would probably have it remapped. I've read somewhere that the gains are very similar on the 150 and 130. Is this true?

I had a MKIV GTTDI 130 and have also had the A3 1.9tdi Quattro. The gains are similar for the 130 and the 150 but the spool up on the 130 turbo gives a much smoother power delivery than the peaky 150.
