Title: 8v or 16v?
Post by: dave_za on 27 February 2004, 19:50
hi guys,
i currently drive a H-reg 1.6 driver, and want to upgrade to a gti. can anyone suggest pro's and con's of 8v vrs 16v? performance wise. what should i look out for when purchasing?
what is a reasonable price i should pay for one? with abt 120k?
any help will be appreciated
cheers!

have got and had mk2 8v's there good very good as mucho torque, easier to drive i reckon, have got a mk4 20v which needs revving to get the most, and have just got a 16ver as well, when i get it running ill let you know!!! ;D

Hi dude i think that if you are talking mk2 i would go for an 8 valve cheaper insurance and fiesty also easily tuneable, whereas the 16v (in my opinion) is quite hard to keep on the boil very nice on the open road but not so hot on the twisty stuff where torque matters also there is the insurance and the fuel (they run on optimax and some dont run well on normall stuff unless you get a K-star). Ihave owned both and loved both. However if you are looking at a mk3, 8v's are slow but strong and torquey. 16v's are better. But in my oppinion dont buy either because someone likes it more than the other, test drive both, think about the kind of journeys you do and then make your decision. I will say one thing though "If i did'nt do 50+ miles a day i would have a VR6".  8)

I say get the 8v.

Cheaper insurance
Better mpg

And how often do u rev it so hard to get 8.0secs to 60mph?

exactly.. if ur like me and drive normally 90% of the time, then u accelerate to 60mph with the rest of the traffic...

Agree with all, the 8v is better for town useage, my 16valver was pefect on long stretches to work, but drank petrol, my old mk3 8v was great but a bit wallowy (is that a word ?? ;D) nothing that a good slamming wouldnt sort.. and same here, if i wasn't doing a round trip of 127 miles a day (i know, im mad..mad ::) ) Id flog the caddy and get a VR6 straight away!!

Best advise was to test them all, Ive fallen into the trap of buying what a mate thinks is good and hated it straight away!!  Drive them all then you cant blame anyone but yourself ;D

Driven both..I went 4 the 8v.Find it more fun.But as what was said earlier it is a matter of taste and the journey you plan on using it 4..If you can have a go in both.. :)..

I have both models and they are fine motors 8v better round town 16v better on the open road dont find the valver harder to drive though ,the engine  just picks up and revs where the 8v tails off, find the 8v is around the early forties to the gallon find the valver around 35-38mpg,try both as other peeps mention if you dont like revving your motors hard you prob better with the 8v,depending on your age insurance will be cheaper as  well, the 8v`s torque is nice around 1500-3500rpm it`s nice and strong whereas my 16v picks up around 2500rpm and keeps on going  good luck..

All 8v owners by any chance?
Personally i would go for a 16v, its a much better car, engine wise and suspension.
Lets just get rid of some myths that seem to float around most golf forums  :-

1. 8v is a better handling car than the 16v
FACT - The stock suspension for the 16v is lower and stiffer.
2. 8v has more low down torque than a 16v
FACT - The 16v has more torque and BHP all the way up the rev range.
8v owners like to say that their car are more torquey lower down the rev range because they know they own an inferior car to the 16v.

In my opinion having driven both 8 and 16v, the 8v is exactly the same as 16v up to 4000rpm, then the 8v dies while the 16v takes off.
The ONLY thing in favour of the 8v is the later(88 onwards) digifant cars can run on normal unleaded.
However its easy to mod a 16v to accept normal unleaded without power loss.

ITS GOT TO BE A 16V  ;D

true, very true ^

I got 115mph out my 8v digifant a few minutes ago down the bypass.

I love my 8v to bits but the 16v is much better to be honest.

8v's are easier to work on than the 16v ???

The 8v is a little bit easier to work on than the 16v.
16v isn't really that much harder  ;)
Don't get me wrong, i do like 8v's  :D
But no one can say they are better in ANY way than a 16v, thats like saying the 16v is better than the vr6.
