There has been lots of talk about MPG from the Gti owners and also Speedo Readings. I think we all agree that our speedos do NOT match those of the GPS and there's a 10% accuracy error blah blah. Now of course this helps us not to get caught by mr plod, a good thing I thinks.
However, are we being ripped off!?!?
If the car says I'm travelling at 80mph and I do this constant for 4 hours, I will cover 320miles.
If the Satnav is to be belived then I'm doing 72 mph and I will cover 288miles.
If in that distance I use 40 litres of fuel then.
Car says I've done (320 miles / 40litres / 0.22 (to get mpg)) = 36.4mpg
Actual if SatNav is correct (288 miles / 40litres / 0.22 (to get mpg)) = 32.7mpg
Thats almost 4mpg difference!
I suppose the good news is less miles on my car than actual!!
Not good though is it!! Explains why £50 of fuel seems to go so quick

The odometer is accurate it is only the Speedo that is 10% fast.
The digital speed accessed via the Climate Control display is accurate and is probably what computer uses to calculate the MPG.

good point!

i hear what your saying mate... and see what you mean, my MK4 is a fecking lyer at the best of times anyway, i do between 38-42mpg on my jaunt from home to work everyday, put 50 quid in but get only 360 miles out of her, now i dogged my VTS for months and was getting 300 miles from 34 quid of fuel! i have to say i dont beleve for a second im getting that sort of MPG....

I do not personally reckon that I am getting ripped off.
It was my decision to purchase a GTI and leave my MPG counting days behind when I traded in my TDI. I knew that it would cost me more in fuel on a weekly basis and resigned myself to this when I changed. I swore that I would never look at the MPG I was getting when I bought the GTI and have only looked at it once when I travelled up to the Lake District for the week. When I did this I looked at the Brim to Brim method of calculating the mileage rather than the average MPG from the cars computer (32.8mpg if I remember right :nerd:). I bought the GTI to get back some enjoyment in driving a sporty car, rather than look at the fuel consumption.
I'd be more inclined to see what I got the consumption down to after giving it some, rather than tootling along at 70mph in the inside lane of the motorway to see what I could get it up to
Looks like we need another golden rule adding to the ten commandments.
"I shall not covet nor read my fuel consumption"

Mike, how do you know that the odometer is accurate? They are usually out by a few % too.
Also the digital readout on the climate display can be out of wack as well, it doesn't take it's reading via GPS and may well recieve the same signal as the speedo.
If you want to know your fuel consumption brim your tank, note your miles, drive around happily, brim again when ready and calculate it.
It'll always be different from the trip computer reading but it's far more accurate.

I compared the odometer reading with the GPS distance on my way to work a few times and it was spot on.
I also noted that the Climate Speed reading was always within +/- 1MPH of the GPS reading.
There is an adjustment you can make via VAG-COM which makes the speedo reading the same as the GPS speed but it has the side effect of making the odometer run about 10% slow.
Maybe not a bad thing as it means the car will be putting less miles on it
But I just put it back to standard as all the readings in the trip computer will be wrong.

Our GPS cant keep up with our car

If you are saying that your average fuel consumption readout in your MFD is inaccurate, then there is a way to adjust it, via VAG-COM or the stealer 'puter.
