Post by: NormanChadwick on 07 September 2007, 00:08
Hello there fellow golf owners this is my first post on this forum so please exuse me being a bit green.
Firstly my problem with my golf is when i'm driving on the motorway i get vibration throug my steering wheel at speed from 60mph onwards. Now i have got bbs rims the origional wheels for my car which have all been recently balanced, i have had this problem for some years now going through various sets of wheels. which is why i whent back to origionals by the way tyre size is 195/50/15. I also have had various mechanics check all my steering bushes and they tell me they are all fine. Now all I can guess is the freeplay i am getting in my steering wheel whilst at standstill it moves about 2cm left to right hope you know what I mean. If I need a new steering rack does anyone know where I can Locate on or get mine reconditiond I live in North London.

Thanks for the quick reply guys very much apprectiated. I have tryed thightening that alan head bolt under the indicator stalk but this does not help. Also when I refered to play I mean when you turn the steering wheel left to right just to clear any misunderstanding. I do find the ajust allen key under a flap to adjust your rack very promising I will check on monday when I get back to work for this allen keyhole. I will ask some of my mechanic mates who I work with also and if I get any Joy I will post results. By the way I am an Automotive Electrition and work on London Buses.

swap your rear wheels onto the front to rule out any issues with a buckled wheel :)

For anyone who owns LHD Golfs, I live in Spain and not far from the largest scrapyard in Europe. Should anyone need bits, I can see what I can find over here, time permitting and we can arrange payments and postage. I will not do this for profit, purely cost, (and a little for fuel if a special trip) so rest assured.

Ok so I have checked out my car today and I think I have sussed it out, there is a turnbuckle (U/J) type thing at the bottom of the steering colum which connects the colum to the rack I can see that there is alot of wear in this joint so I am going to go down german and swedish tommorow and hopefull they will have a replacement for me. I am not sure what the part is called so if anyone knows what it is could you let me know please.

just called a 'universal joint', GSF prob wont sell em so its scrappy hunting time.  Start with MK2 Jettas, or little 1.3s more likly to be in good nick :)

Its not just plain old warped brake discs causing this problem?

No joy at G/S so it looks like the scrapy's it is.
I have recently put new brake disks and that did not cure my prob but cheers for the input guy's.
