Hey...bought a golf gti turbo yesterday. read about on the forum about this chattering noise; but can't come to a definate conclusion, hence the post...when i lift of it almost gose ch ch ch ch...if you get me. not one long pssshhht. i guess the boost recirculator is at fault??? is this going to do any damage to the engine/turbo. going to replace if is the problem. but not got time at moment. it doesnt happen in neutral (i.e no load) and only hear it quite faintly when the window's open...unless there is already a DV on it?lol also if i got for a dump to atmosphere DV, which one is the most discreet. only want a very faint sound. Thanks a lot guys. Andy

Couple of simple rules with that
atmospheric dv = nono. if you want to hear a noise when you change gear then get a bigger turbo inlet pipe and an induction kit (no oiled filters though)
standard plastic bosch dv from vw = cack - replace with a piston type (e.g forge 007p)

cheers for the fast reply. would said unit be the cause of the chattering i mentioned? Thankkks!
-
I'm tempted to say definitely yes... but without a diagnostic reading it's not possible to say for sure. Could be hearing wastegate chatter which could mean one of the solenoids needs replacing.
-
solenoids? which ones? are they expensive? Thanks mate
-
There are 2 main culprits, the N75 (hangs off a little vac hose near the dv) which is inexpensive and the other... n7...something (memory failing here) which is nearer the block and more expensive. I wouldn't replace those though without a diagnostics computer saying so. The DV though, i would recommend replacing the stock item even if it wasn't faulty.
-
nice one i will do. should there be any noise heard from the wategate/turbo on lifting off the accelerator or not? hope its not something expensive!
-
forge 007p on ebay for £80, I've read some half decent things about them so worth getting.
-
ill check that out. seems this "fluttering" sounds im having would be caused by the valve and not the solenoid. i like it though.lol
-
the boost also sounds pretty loud when the window is open? is it normal to sound loud? and if i take engine cover off and rev it, would the noise come from the DV or further down? It sounds like more a something fluttering than a chattering, if you follow me?
-
alllsssoo, if it was the solenoid nakered, would this not throw up an engine warning light? thank you guys
-
just been out for a drive. at very low revs, basically when you blip it, it sounds like a metal shaking noise coming from the bonnet. happens when over speed bumps. turbo picks up fine and pulls as it should....could this all be down to nakered DV? any help much appreciated. Thanks
-
Garage
-
still under warranty from where i got it from, so il have to take it bak. sound like turbo is foooked?
-
i had this sound a couple of days ago i was driving up a hill and i give a bit of boot and i heard a noise very simila like a bag of bolts shaking about and the chattering noise popped the bonnet and the top pipe from the dump valve had popped off popped it back on it was sorted
-
i have exactly the same. yea like a bag of light mettalic bolts shking a little bit. comes more from driver's side (maybe cos window's open)....???? likely cause a nakered DV???
-
hi id definatley check all the pies to and from the dump valve at least you can eliminate that if it dosnt help
-
cheers, will do. bought a new OEM DV, should be here tomora or mon. would a leaky pipe or nakered DV casue said noise? just want peace of mind so i can enjoy my night tonight.lol after havin a blown head gasket on my rover BRM along with about 500 other things on it, i bought this and now...ARGH. i mean it still pulls as it should, no lack of power etc, turbo whistles on boost as it should...
-
to be honest it could be a number of things cuasing this just check the pipes thoroughly as obviosly mine was in front of you eyes on top of the dump valve
do you know anyone who has a golf turbo that you could try their dump valve out to see if it has blown or not what dump valve have you got?? is it standard or aftermarket
-
shagged turbo be one of them?lol no i dont know anyone's that i could try unfortunately. it is the OEM valve fitted (the black plastic Bosch one). Thanks
-
well it could be turbo problems is there any extra smoke coming through the exhuast??? usally a sign somthing is up with turbo
if you have the black plastic dv i would suggest replacing this as they had a hell of a lot of problems with these id go for forge dv which i have ive had no problems with this at all ebay i got mine for £35 sqid
-
ok...no appernt smoke coming from the exhaust. not really checked a great deal, but nothing that i have seen. i think il change the DV, if that doesn't cure it, ill take it back. just the place is 80miles away, and wether they'll be able to do it on the day etc. etc. Thanks
-
no problem good luck
-
thanks. just realllly hope its nothing serious. be soo ****** off if it is! Thanks again mate...and if anyone else has any imputs/sggestions too, please please feel free
-
The rattling sound just seems like something is loose.. trust me you'd know if it was your turbo internals rattling around. It may even be the heat shield on the cat, one broken weld and it rattles around.
I'd ring the garage first and make sure they have the proper diagnostic machines on site to check for faults.
A lot of faults that show up on vagcom won't give you a dash warning light.
-
thanks mate...gonna say, nakered compressor fins would cause a hell of a racket and wouldnt be functioning. they dont have it, but can outsource if i bring it there. i did have the engine top cover off last night, so could be that. time for some gaffer tape
-
well i got hold of an oem valve, fitting this evening. that rattle seems to be loose cat cover or something along those lines. Also, could this valve malfunctioning cause a drop in power or increased lag? Thanks
-
Took 5 mins to fit the valve. All is fine. Thanks

if you are after propper chatter like a cossie then no you wont get it, to do this you can block the dump valve and get an induction kit, but then preppare to order a new turbo as the little fella wont take buch of that, that noise happens when the air goes back through the blades of the turbo, again not good for the little fella,
just stick with the wwhhhoooosssshhhhh, or buy a cossie for the chatter.
hope that helps.

Thanks...i was actually tring to get rid of the flutter sound...changed the DV for a new bosch one...the hoses already had jubilee clips so i guess its been done before. the DV i removed resonated when tapped, lkike a pringy feeling, suggesting the diaphragm was shot. put the new one one...literally 5mins...SOLVED! excellent. can hear i lil woosh into the air box if u listen hard. Cold air kit and itll sound mint! Picks up a lot better too now...VW wanted to charge me 60+VAT for the valve...WTF...and the its 95+vat for labour!! WTF! thats ni on £200 for the job. cost me 20 off ebay. glad ive got my head screwed on. only take my car to the garage if its my last hope!lol Thanks, Andy
-
Could this happen on a TDI also? as I have the same issue I think. If so, What DV would be the best to get?
Thanks
-
no mate, TDIs dont have them
