Hi,
I've mentioned this before but it's been steadily getting worse, however I think I have come across something unusual when I was topping up with oil. Is it normal for the car to cut out when you've the oil filler cap off? What happens with the car is it randomly runs from bad to worse to running beautifully and it's wrecking my head because I know as soon as I take it to someone it'll run fine
Help me please!
-
check your breather are not blocked mine does that now and then, , does it burn oil?
-
Have you tried cleaning all the hoses. It sounds as if there is a blockage seen as it breathes on its own when you take the oil filler cap off.
-
I presume you mean the breather being the flying saucer thing on the rocker cover. I presume you unblock it with a little petrol or something? Makes some sense I suppose, although I replaced it not too long ago. Also I would have thought the oil the car burns is normal for something 16 years old, it's not a huge amount anyway.
Davo not sure which hoses you mean tbh
-
yes, you're making a big airleak if you take the cap off, so dont be surprised it it runs funny or cuts out ;)
digifant tuning guide ;)
-
that bloody digifant tuning guide is that the answer to everything  just kidding

After I rebuilt the head on my mums 206 for the first 20 miles or so, it would run dodgy with the oil cap off, and noisey! I wouldn't be massively concerned, as long as it runs fine with the cap on

Ok update, the car's running great apart from when it idles. Think it's the flying saucer thing again - the thing is when it idles (choppily), it's blowing oil out of the rocker cover gasket. Any ideas?
-
If its blowing oil out then replace it?
-
could be the pcv is blocked and causing excess pressure in the crankcase & blowin it out the rocker seal. but 1st thing to do is replace the seal!

Perhaps a little late replying. The hoses I am talking about are the ones that come from the "flying saucer thing" and the ISV, which all lead to the Throttle Body and the air intake hose. Also clean the flying saucer itself.
The rocker gasket is an easy job, may as well change it.
-
1st thing I did was change the rocker cover gasket  if anything it's worse than before  Checked the PCV too, it's possible that it's not working considering the idle, but I doubt it's blocked, I can easily blow air through it both ways.

did you swap the old cork gasket for the newer rubber type, and if so did you swap to the late shoulder-less studs?
-
Well it's a pretty corky gasket, came from gsf - it's a 91 car so I assume it has the right bolts anyway?
Forgot to say all the help so far is much appreciated
-
nah it wont have unless its alreayd had a rubber one fitted they dont have a shank on the bottom, the ones for cork and standard do. I think you have to order a mark 3 one or they get confused at Vw
-
A 91 might have had a rubber gasket from the factory, only way to check is to take the rocker cover off and check the studs. If they have a shoulder you need a cork gasket, if they dont you need a rubber one. The shoulder is there to prevent you from overtightening the cork gasket see.
-
Cool thanks lads, i'll take a closer look at which gasket I got and get a new PCV (from vw this time) and see if that fixes things - fingers crossed!

Just a thought and I hate to bring up what could be bad news, but remove the intake duct, the one that goes from the air filter housing to the throttle body, and look inside the throttle body for excessive oil. You may be getting crankcase compression, thus blowing oil straight into the injection system. If the throttle body is dripping wet, get a compression check done.

Thanks I will.
