hi, im thinking about buying a mk2 golf 1.8 8v gti as a second/weekend car, just wondering what sort of 0-60 times they do standard (nowadays not new) and how easy is it to squeeze bhp out of them? what engine mods are the most common? cam etc?
thanks

if its only a weekend car, strip out the back seats, interior, whatever you dnt need and deck it right out.. easiest and cheapest way to gain faster 0-60times..
2nd hand cam and pulley cost me bout £200 for piper fast road and adjustable vernier.. about 20bhp if set up right and its a doddle to change over..
u probably know all this but hoe it helps

yeah i was gunna strip it :)
just wondering how quick they are really as ive never been in one, ill probably stick some cams in but what other things can be done?
just started looking into golfs so any info will help :)

well if you get a lowish mileage one, fully stripped out will rag on.. mine atm has done 151,500 miles, still pulls upto around 110mph and tops 130mph, well off the clock...
i must advise that you get sum adjustable coilovers because no weight in the back, with standard suspension, you'd be lookin at oversteer heaven ( if you can call it heaven ) ..
other things you cud do is stiffen up the engine mounts, puts the power down alot better and dnt cost too much..cnt really think of many cheap mods for more power except for a decent air fitler and maby a bit of nitrous

Standard 8v 0-60 is roughly 8.5s..

Got a 1985 press ad somewhere at home that proudly claims in bold type:
112bhp, 0-60 in 8.3sec, 119mph (I think).

this lists most cars, nicked it from another thread on here but it is useful

Hope it helps

that states 8.53 to 60 Loads quicker than my MK3, perhaps i should forget about the VR6 MK3 and just get a MK2 16V!!!!

Get a mk2 16v and stick it on a classic car policy.

mk2 16v have simular figures to a mk4 1.8 turbo i believe, obviously not quite as good, but with it stripped and on coilovers and some mods done under the bonnet, seriously close call!

mk2 with a mk3 2.0l 16v, easiest way to get a hell of a lot of power just from a conversion..
stripped mk2 2.0 would easily touch at least 170bhp per tonne, nice stats if you ask me!

Get a 16v, mine is quicker to 80 than a mk4 turbo!

Second that. Just put a ABF in my mk2 and it really shifts!
