Well went to see an old mate today in Maidenhead in Berkshire today, and showed him at long last my Golf .He was previously a tigersix racer for many years and boy oh boy can he drive a race car.So as you do we got onto topic of cars and he was talking about buying a Mini cooper works to use road town.Ok i thought, i said why on earth would u wanna buy one of those, have u ever tried looking at buying a 2nd hand Gti with your 17k spending budget. So in my wisdom , quickly sent him onto Youtube.co.uk and found as video showing the Mk5 GTi, with one where manual gti was being tested against one with DSG, so he watched it, and silly me said, "well why dont you take mine for a spin just around the block to see what you make of mine" ................... oh boy what a silly decision that was.
Off we went gently out of maidenhead town centre out onto the twisty country lanes, and oh my good, he drove like a man possessed!!!, i never really given My GTi any kinda hard stick especially bends and country lanes and at speed. And i have to say he couldnt get over the performance of the car, handling, pickup, mid range pull, build, he couldnt put any words of,"oh its ok", it was pure praise and totally changed his impression of the car, and now wants one!!!!. in total we went on a 13 mile test drive, and i kid you not, the car had drank nearly half a quarter of fuel!!!!!. Mpg average was 14.6MPG!!!. I Lost the feeling in my right foot and left nail marks in the passenger door handle!!.
Lession learned today was never hand your pride and joy to a ex professional race driver, but proved to me the car can handle itself in no way id ever thought it could be driven!.
I had a swift drink apon return to his house, but actually kissed the tarmac on his driveway when we pulled up such was the relief!!

A day that you will remember then . Everyone thinks that they are a pretty good driver. Then you go out with someone who really is.........
-
Nice to hear of a GTI being driven the way it was meant
-
....I recommend a CarLimits day with Andy Walsh on North Weald airfield where you can experience your car's limits without damage (except to tyre wear and petrol!). Also Drivetrain with Big John in Oxfordshire but on road.
It's not a matter of driving at the full limit but knowing where that limit is and driving safely but fast within it when you want. Remapping your brain is actually more important than remapping your car.

So does this mean we need another addition to the ten commandments? :undecided:
NEVER lend your pride and joy to a race driver....as he will covet your car and you will cover your car seat with poo!!
14.6MPG
