Not a mechanic by any means so I dont know what to do about this.I have an oil leak at the right hand side end of the gear box.I have found a make shift job obviously done by the previous owner which is a patch up job using the plastic metal stuff like the stuff used for repairing holes in exhausts. It is covering,I presume a hole, on I think what you call the cover plate. It has the VW sign on it.The cover plate it on the passenger end of the gearbox where the clutch cable is attached to the arm.I am really worried about this, does it mean I nead a whole new casing or gearbox. The thing is the car is driving great.

its called a cover pate by the main dealers and comes in at around a fiver.
I *think* you need to drain the oil in order to replace it, and obviously replace the oil when your done. Theres discussion on what oil to use in your gearbox on the forum somewhere.

Is there a gasket kit to seal it in as well or is it just tapped in?Was really starting to worry there for a minute my mind is more at ease now, thanks.

Not that i can see looking at etos, but probably best to ask at the dealers, or see if anyone who has done this job in the past comes online and says so.

its just a cap that taps in, no need to drain the oil, just jack the car up as high as safely possible on that side, then lever the cap out and replace,
the cap is 020 141 073A part number... not too sure on the price, but again, around a fiver... may as well change the release bearing while your there... not sure on this part number, but its a pi$$ easy job...
