Title: Do I have problems with the engine??
Post by: Peskarik on 30 August 2007, 16:02
I've done almost 6000 km in the first month of owning Ed30. Ran it in normally, almost as per TT's plan - taking it progressively to higher RPM as it made more kilometers, not keeping constant RPMs (but I went to Italy when it had about 1000 miles on the clock and it was mostly constant high RPMs on the highway, but all according to running in plan of TT). I went to France twice now, and I have taken the car all the way up to 230kmh, though most of the time it just ran on autopilot at 140 or so.

The last trip to France, 590km, mostly highways, 120-145 kmh on autopilot - average consumption is 9 liters/100 km. Some of you forumites get better consumption. Could I have some kind of problem with the engine?  :undecided: I put 98RON in it, when possible - Shell V-Power 100.

If I read that correctly, you are just concerned that it is using too much fuel???

You are probably concentrating too much on the "enjoyment" factor at the moment.  Your main target is "smiles per mile", rather than "gallons per mile"

When you have gotten over the initial rush of ownership, and start to drive it a little more sedately, then you should see better fuel economy.

THere is never going to be "gallons per mile", I really really enjoy the GTI the more I drive it. Now I am at work, and the car is outside the window, and I look at it from time to time. Wow, those are nice wheels, and I like the silver band on them, and the red breaks look nice. And it is white!  looks super, people watch.  In France there were no nice cars, so mine stood out. Have seen only 2 GTIs on the whole trip of over 1000 km.

But if I keep driving like that I will have to make 6 services a year.

I am really really thinking to get it chiped by Oettinger, and put Eibach Pro-System Plus on it. But with 18s it may look a bit weird when you lower it, the wheels just disappear in the wheel arches. Have no money for 19s though.

We got about 11 to 12 in our first long distance trip with the GTI. Not bad me thinks.

Sounds like the issue is your right foot

Don't worry about the fuel consumption, just enjoy your new(ish) toy

I was also REALLY surprised this morning!!  What a waste of money that is!

Dude, white is very special paint, not to everyones liking, but I LOVE it. Yes, it gets a bit dirty, but not THAT dirty. The biggest problem is that all scratches are visible on it. If someone opens his/her car door and slams into mine, even with little force, I see a black/gray scratch. These suck.  Otherwise, ze auto ist super! Molto bene!  Goes like a locomotive.  But need more power already.

Well, I do not NEED it, but I WANT it.

Yeah I know what you mean about the power. I had a Civic Type R before I bought this car which just didn't do it for me. Felt pretty weak in the gears and I got fed up of wringing its neck. One of the reasons I bought the Golf is that it is so easy to extract extra power.

I enjoyed the test drive and it is a quick car but I just want that little extra. Hopefully the Revo will keep me happy for a couple of years.

more like a couple of months, and then you will want a rocket engine installed in the boot.

Was just thinking the same lol.......so thanks to google...

  9 liters/100 km = 26.1349538 miles per gallon

I think Google is quoting a US gallon (as opposed to a 'proper' gallon) as 9 litres per 100kms equals just under 32mpg.

So Peskarik, you drive between 90 mph and 145 mph, blat about all over Europe, return nearly 32mpg and you want to know if your engine is dicky as fuel consumption is so bad?

Am I missing something here?

You are right, I tried with another converter, that uses Imperial gallons, and I get 32mpg. :lipsrsealed: Opps

230bhp, heavy right foot, 32mpg = incredible fuel efficiency.

What an engine.
