hi all,
i would really appreciate if anyone could shed some light on this for me please.
i have a 2004 golf gt tdi with only 25k on the clock. last week i had an EML light appear with EMISSIONS WORKSHOP on the screen come up. i took it to my local vw dealer, (complete basta*ds) and they tried to replace the fan fuse but it kept blowing so they wanted to carry out further diagnostics (£250) to find what it is.
i took my car back from them as i did want them to take the mick no more so i gave the car to a vw specialist and he too says it is a electrical/wiring fault which he is going to consult another person on. he also mentioned that it could be related to the fan's which may need replacing (and they aint cheap) but for a reletively newer car with only 25k on the clock this shouldnt be the case but if it is then i should complain to VW. Unfortunately, my warranty ran out about 4months ago.
just wondering anyone else has come across this? and any advise would be great?

i've just had some diagnostics done on the car and apparantly it is the fans that are not working. there is power to them but there not working working, so guess they need replacing.......MASSIVE expense!

If you have had the car serviced, on schedule at a franchised VW dealer, then ask them to approach VWUK, and look for some kind of "goodwill" gesture.
However, if it has been serviced by an independent, then you have two hopes, and one of them is called Bob!

this is still an on-going issue
apparantly it is not the fans now but the throttle body needs replacing, has anyone had this problem due to emissions workshop light and EML light?

If they are going to charge u you £250 just to tell you how f*cked up your car is I wouldnt bother. Drive your car down the road and call out your recovery guys. They are usually much more relaible from what I have found, and will usually give you a good insight into common problems. Take your new found knowledge and educate your local dealership, easypeasy. Job done!!

Whenever you have your car worked on at any business, they are legally obliged to give you a copy of the job sheet (but often you have to specifically ask for it). If the EMS warning light has been displayed whilst driving, then it will definately store DTCs, or fault codes. Go back to the garage, and DEMAND they supply you with the printout of fault codes from EACH time you took the car in.
When you have these lists, either scan and upload them (via photobucket or similar), or type the list in this thread, and we will be able to help further.
Without seeing the lists of fault codes, any such "diagnosis" on this forum (and/or anywhere else) will merely be "guesswork", which could result in you paying bills for un-necessary work.

I have a 2004 GTTDI also, lucky enough this warning hasnt appeared...and I hope it doesnt (my cars sitting on 23K miles)
...However I did get it a few times in my old Mk4 GTI - it tended to appear on the computer and then disappear on the next journey...dealer (or stealer) told me not to worry about it and the car was fine....In my experience the independents are better at locating problems and issues and thats were I'll be heading when my car is out of warranty (which is soon) for all future work on the Mk5!!

I agree that independents are generally better at locating faults and problems etc. However, they do still need to be a VAG specialist independent, and have the correct diagnostic equipment.
One of my mates is a very trustworthy independent, and whilst he isn't a dedicated VAG specialist, he does work on a lot of VAGs, and is a bit of a Corrado fan. He has some very expensive SnapOn, and SykesPikavant fault code readers, which both have the extra VAG add-on modules, but they are both useless when compared to the genuine VAS5052, and the VAG-COM.
Neither machine could interrogate a number of modules on my B6 S4, and on the few modules they could interrogate, they both gave incorrect readings on the ABS module. Fortunately, he is very trustworthy, and reliable, and I know he wouldn't rely on faulty or wrong readings.
Unfortunately, there are many out there that are simply out of their depths with modern CAN-BUS electronic control module diagnosis.

hi all,
just to let you know my car is sorted now, fingers crossed! as said i had a friend who is a VW dealer techy (but didnt charge stupid prices) fix it. It was the throttle body part that needed replacing, or at least i tihnk its called a throttle body, it is also managed electronically through a sensor, replaced it with a brand new one (£340) and all is ok again, no light, and fans are working fine again also!
now to my next problem, anyone know a good independant bumper repairer, not im terms of dents but i have three small scuffs on my bumper (on the right hand side) which i would like sorted, if anyone know's anyone in the heathrow area?
i will post a seperate thread also perhaps.

Are the scuff just surface damage and still smooth or can you actually feel that the paint is scuffed?
Firstly I'd try removing any scuff with a surface compound and if that works, follow it up with a good buffing polish and wax.
If that doesn't work then you can get a decent scratch repairer in.
