Title: Mk2 GTI Engine
Post by: john-melbourne on 27 August 2007, 09:55
Hi Guys & Girls,

Just wondering if looked after how many mile are the MK2 gti engines good for? The reason i ask is my budget only allows for the higher milage cars at around 120+.

Thanks

John

they will go on for over 200k easily if looked after.  All the cars i end up buying are around 200k and have gone like hell. The one i have now doesnt use a drop of oil on 200k.

120+ miles usually is not a problem, but it depends on how the engine has been looked after. There are a number of owners here that have cars with their original engines fitted, boasting well over 200,000 miles, and still going strong. I myself had an old 1980 Audi 80 GLE, 1.6 injection, which had pretty much the same engine as the Golfs, and I sold that with 190,000 miles and still going strong back in the early 1990's.
If the engine puffs out a bit of blue smoke, then attention will be needed. If black smoke, then a good tune up will usually sort it. If steam, then the head gasket may need attention.

mines on 175k and is still going strong, as said 120k is nothing for one of these. buy one with plenty of history to show its been well looked after
