Title: oil dip stick level
Post by: sco3y on 25 February 2004, 17:54
can anyone tell me if i have the correct dip stick for my 8v gti.      part no: 027115611b.

i have done an oil change and put 4ltr's of oil back in and the dip stick reads well above the max level. i have checked the guide tube to see if it is seated correctly and i checked the oil on level ground. i know its a dumb thing to ask but if you dont know ask someone who does.

i left the car for an hour to drain with oil filter off and i cranked the car over a few times aswell. before the oil change the oil level was above the max, thats why i'm wondering if it has the correct dip stick. by the way i have only had the car for 2 months.

checked on etka and yes your park number is right..
there was 1 for diesel engine and 2 for petrol and both of the petrol engine dipsticks were the same part number.

after the oil change youve put the new filter on and filled it up to max start the engine and let it run for a few mins..... the oil level should go down about 500ml in your case it should read bang on max...

Did you also change the oil filter?

The level of oil sits half litre higher until you start the car and fill the new filter with oil.

So its defo got the 4 litre sump. the only other thing to do is drain the oil out and refill it using a measuring jug to get the right amount in if your worried that the dipstick level is incorrect.

i think your right modulator. will it make any diffrrence if the oil filter is a non vw origanal. cos thats whats fitted an aftermarket cheepo. i know i know i should have got an origanal one.

I always find it better to fit an original VW filter as they have a pressure relief valve in them that some of the cheaper after market ones don't have.

I have a 1.3 golf 1988, with a filter change it takes 3.5 litres, without its about 3.2. Whenever i do it, i put in 3.5 litres, and the level is fine. When you say you put in 4 litres, is this because you have a GTI, or because you have your figures slightly wrong?

Max on my '88 digi is 3.8 litres.  4 litres puts it another quarter above the max mark.
